Arabian Nights Theme Party Game Ideas

An Arabian Nights theme party is all about the mysterious, exotic and sensual fun. Look for games that revolve around the theme, or around various depictions of this theme, such as in popular movies and TV shows like "Aladdin," "Lawrence of Arabia," "I Dream of Jeannie" or any of the "Arabian Nights" films. Does this Spark an idea?

Children's Parties

Disney has provided lots of resources for kids' Arabian Nights parties, with the movie "Aladdin." You can do a treasure hunt focusing on finding homemade "caves" full of gold, or have kids play "musical carpets." Add a magical touch to traditional games. For example, have the children play pin the lamp on the genie, or hire a face painter to draw henna-like patterns on children's faces and hands. Hire a snake charmer or Middle Eastern musicians for a big blowout gala.

Bachelor/Bachelorette Parties

Arabian Nights is a popular theme for bachelor or bachelorette parties, and one of the first things to encourage is the wearing of costumes. A costume contest for best harem girl (or man) gets guests into the spirit of the party. A drum circle, henna painting or belly dance lesson might be great for a girls' night as well. Adapt traditional bachelor or bachelorette party games to the theme, such as using Arabian Nights items in a scavenger hunt or turning Arabian references into a drinking game.

Theme Activities

Go for activities and entertainment that help to set the mood of an Arabian Nights theme and provide your guests with something to do at the same time. For an adult party, hire a belly dancer to showcase the traditional Middle Eastern performance with sheer veils and flowing scarves. You may even hire petting zoo animals to fit your theme, like peacocks or camels, if you are hosting an outdoor party. (Outdoors is great for an Arabian Nights party, since you can set up tents for various activities.)

Garden Of Eden Decoration Ideas

The Garden of Eden was described as a natural wonder with trees, plants and flowers.

The Garden of Eden, as described in the Old Testament, was a lush, animal-filled paradise that had everything its inhabitants, Adam and Eve, needed to live a comfortable existence. The storyline has it that there was a special fruit tree, the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, in the middle of the garden that was off-limits. Adam and Eve could eat everything else in the garden. The Serpent convinces Eve it is all right to eat of the forbidden fruit, and Adam and Eve are punished. Decorating for a Garden of Eden theme means having trees, plants and flowers, serpents and fruit of all kinds. Does this Spark an idea?

Trees, Plants and Flowers

Decorating for a Garden of Eden theme would be easiest if it were outdoors in a place that is jungle- or forest-like. If this is not a possibility, it is not impossible to bring a jungle or forest to your location by decorating a deck or patio with large potted leafy plants and flowers. These do not even have to be living, but could be faux plastic and silk. Buying large real or faux potted plants and flower can be an expensive proposition. One solution is to borrow these from friends or ask guests to bring one to make the garden. If you are creative and have time, you can paint trees, plants and flowers on wood or sturdy cardboard like scenery for a play and use them to decorate the location.

Serpent

Decorating a Garden of Eden would not be complete without a serpent lurking around. You could place one large serpent on or around an apple tree. Large stuffed serpents can be found in toy stores, or you can borrow one from a friend. You can easily make your own serpent by cutting the legs off green tights and stuffing them with pillow filling. You can decorate them with white eyes made of felt or fabric paint and add colors to help it look like a snake. The garden can have many of these serpents lurking around as well as smaller plastic snakes that you can buy at a dollar store.

Fruit

The Garden of Eden was purported to be lush with fruits of all kind. You can use fruit to decorate the garden in a couple of ways. Strings of hanging lights with plastic fruit can add charm and lighting to the garden. Another way to add fruit is to hang plastic fruit from trees and plants. Plastic fruit can be bought at dollar stores in the toy section. Hang apples from the Tree of Knowledge with the serpent entwined in it. You can also place bowls of fresh fruit around the garden.

Christmas Gift Ideas For Mom

Decorate your Christmas gifts for Mom with festive wrapping and bows.

Finding the perfect gift for your mother during the holiday season is a way to show your love and appreciation for her throughout the year. You do not have to spend a great amount of money to show how important she is in your life. If you put some time and effort into finding the perfect gift for her, she will appreciate it. You can purchase a gift or make something with your own hands and creativity just for her.

Jewelry

A piece of jewelry is a good choice for a Christmas gift for your mom. For instance, a mother's ring symbolizes you and your siblings and the special relationship you have with your mother. A mother's ring typically places the mom's birthstone in the center of the setting and surrounds it with the birthstones of her children. Your mom will treasure the constant reminder of her children every time she wears the ring.

When selecting a piece of jewelry for your mom, look at the jewelry she already owns to get a sense of her style and taste. Look to see what type of precious metals she favors such as silver or gold and whether she prefers delicate pieces or large, bold pieces.

Comforts

Treat Mom to something warm and comfortable during the Christmas season. A new warm robe or a comfortable pair of pajamas will be a welcome gift during the winter months. You can put together a collection of comfort gifts for your mom such as a new robe, slippers and pajamas all together in one big gift. If she spends a lot of time walking, running or standing on her feet give her something to help her sore feet such as a foot massager or soak.

Luxury Basket

Put together a basket of all your mother's favorite luxurious and decadent treats. Fill a basket with gourmet chocolate, coffees and other treats you know she enjoys. Make the basket yourself to ensure that all her favorites are included. You can also create a basket filled with lotions, bath salts, loofah and everything else she needs for her own spa day at home. You can also tuck in a gift certificate for a day of luxury in her favorite day spa among the treasures in the basket. Decorate with ribbons and bows for a festive Christmas look.

Adventure

Give your mom the gift of adventure this holiday season by planning a day of fun and excitement for her. You can give her a gift certificate for a ride in a hot air balloon, for example. An adventure gift can be something as exciting as driving in a racecar, skydiving or bungee jumping or it can be something relaxing such as a tour of a winery and a gourmet lunch for her and a guest.

Barbeque Pig Techniques

Use the proper technique to barbecue a pig for just the right flavor

Barbecue pig serves as the main dish for holiday celebrations like Noche Buena (Christmas Eve) in some Central American countries. Find the best pigs for barbecue from a nearby farm. Contact the local agricultural agency to find a farm that raises pigs. The farmer may butcher the pig for you, or arrange preparation by a local butcher. With advance notice, your local grocery store can order a whole pig. The best pigs for barbecue weigh between 60 and 120 pounds after cleaned and prepped. A pig weighing more than 140 pounds becomes too heavy to handle and may not cook properly. An 80 pound pig will serve 60 to 80 people. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Hawaiian Luau Style

When barbecuing a whole pig Hawaiian Luau style, prepare a hole about three to four feet deep with an opening into which the whole pig will fit, usually about two feet by four feet wide. Over-fill the hole by 20 percent with kindling and mesquite wood pieces, then place stones over the wood. Light the fire and let it burn about two hours allowing the red hot rocks to sink slightly into the pit. Place the salted pig on the rocks in the pit, cover it with banana leaves and wet burlap, seal the pit with plastic bags. In about 12 hours, you will have Hawaiian Luau pig.

Whole Hog in a Smoker

To pull this off you will need a wood-burning smoker large enough to handle a whole pig. Fill the large smoker unit with oak and mesquite wood and light 16 to 17 hours before serving. It takes the smoker about an hour to reach 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Position the pig into place inside the smoker. The pig cooks at this temperature for four hours. Continually add water to the smoker as needed. Drop the temperature to 225 to 250 degrees Fahrenheit for the remaining 12 to 13 hours. The barbecued pig will become very tender and hot so remove it from the smoker carefully.

Philippine Style

The Philippine people will barbecue a pig for special occasions and holidays. With this technique, the pig gets cleaned, shaved and butchered. The whole butchered pig gets stuffed with garlic, lemon grass, salt, crushed black peppercorns, vinegar, soy sauce, thyme, spices and red or green onions. With the stuffed body cavity sewn closed, the whole pig gets fastened to a long bamboo pole. Prepare a pit about 6 to 12 inches deep in the ground, fill with charcoal and light. Turned continually and basted with cola, the pig roasts on a spit over a bed of hot coals. A small pig cooks about 3 to 4 hours, while a larger pig takes about 5 to 6 hours.

Oven

Unlike the other techniques, this one involves the use of the oven on your kitchen at home and uses a much smaller pig, about 12 to 20 pounds. Wash the pig and place in a solution of 15 quarts water, salt and sugar. Combine three large garbage bags for containing this brining solution. Place the pig inside the sealed bags and refrigerate for 12 to 24 hours turning once. When ready, remove the pig, pat dry and stuff the body cavity with foil to prevent caving when roasting. In a 250 degree Fahrenheit oven, roast for three hours until interior reaches 130 degree Fahrenheit. Increase oven temp to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, basting with vegetable oil every 15 minutes for about an hour.

Do Children Have To Pay For Parents' Debts When The Parent Dies

When a parent dies, children do not have a responsibility to pay their parent's debts, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Debts are typically the responsibility of the deceased person's estate after death. In some cases, the surviving spouse has a limited responsibility for the debt, particularly in community property states. The terms of the deceased parent's will, individual state statutes and the terms of a loan agreement dictate how debts are managed after death.

Estate Debts

When a parent dies, outstanding debts typically pass to the estate for satisfaction. The executor of the estate, often named in the will, helps validate the legitimacy of the debts in accordance with the probate laws of the state of residence. With approval from the probate court, the executor pays legitimate estate debts prior to dividing and disbursing the assets to the beneficiaries. If necessary, assets will be liquidated to satisfy the debts. If the children are beneficiaries of the estate, they may not receive expected assets due to their parent's accumulated debt.

General Debts

Children do not have to pay for specific general debts, such as credit card balances and utility bills, when the parent dies unless they are also named as co-owners of the accounts. If the children are named as co-owners of the account, they will have to pay their share. The parent's estate will pay the parent's portion of the account, such as 50 percent if there are only two people listed as the account owners. If the children can prove that they did not incur any of the debt, the probate court may allocate the full portion to the estate. If the estate's assets are not sufficient to cover the debt, the children will be responsible if they are named as co-owners. General debts may go unpaid if the parent is the sole account owner and if the assets are not sufficient to cover the balance.

Mortgage Debt

Children do not have to pay the mortgage on their parent's home after the parent dies unless they are named as the executor of the estate or if they are the beneficiary of the home. Typically, a home mortgage considers death a default of the mortgage loan, making the balance of the debt due and payable at the time of death. If the parents bequeath the home to their children subject to the mortgage, the children must pay the mortgage debt. If the home is bequeathed as not subject to the mortgage, the parent's estate pays the debt and may then transfer the title to the children. The home may be sold by the estate or by the children to pay the mortgage debt.

Vehicle

Like mortgages, most vehicle loans include a clause stating that death constitutes default on the loan, making it payable in its entirety after the loan owner dies. The terms of a parent's will should specifically state whether the estate proceeds should pay the vehicle debt. If children inherit the vehicle with a loan attached, they also have the option to procure their own financing or sell the vehicle.

Birthday Cake Ideas For Kids

Deciding on a birthday cake idea for your child or someone else's, depends on a number of factors. First, is the child a girl or boy? Second, what is their age? Third, what are their hobbies and interests? Once you have answered these three questions, you can then begin to narrow down the choices a little. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Decide on the Type

Decide if you are going to make your own birthday cake or order one from a local bakery, supermarket or even online. Once you have decided on your method, will it be ice cream or cake or a combination of the two? What flavor -- chocolate, vanilla, pineapple upside down? Will it be a traditional layer cake or a sheet cake? Sheet cakes are perfect for larger groups of 10 or more.

Choose a Theme

A good place to get ideas is at your local supermarket's bakery. Most will have catalogs of ideas and you can start your search for ideas there. Choosing a theme is also very important. It will not only set the tone of the party, but you can now adapt the theme of the cake to the birthday party décor as well. You may also want to do the obvious and ask your child what he or she would like. You may be surprised at some of the ideas they come up with.

Classic Themes for Boys and Girls

If you want to go with something traditional, princesses and pirates are always classic themes. For girls, Cinderella and princess castle cakes are always a bit hit. For boys, pirate ship and treasure chest cakes will be cause for celebration.

Go Wild!

If the kid you are planning a cake for loves animals, you may consider a barnyard animal cake. How about a pink pony cake for girls or a blue cow cake for boys? Critters are also fun. Ladybugs, snakes, dinosaurs, crocodiles and butterflies are all cakes to consider.

Grown Up Jobs

Many kids like to pretend what they will be when they grow up. How about a cake that represents their interests? Fire trucks, racetracks, ice skaters, space rockets, ballerinas, hula dancers, fishermen and baseball players are all some fun ideas. Some cakes can get really intricate and even incorporate moving parts. For example, the ice skater cake can include a pond with a moving skater on it. This should only be attempted by the very serious cake maker and will require more than just a recipe.

Match Party Favors

Whatever your final choice, remember that a fun birthday cake can lead to an unforgettable birthday experience for your child. You can even hand out party favors with the cake. For instance, if you choose a racetrack theme, hand out toy cars from any dollar store. Or, if you decide on a princess cake, buy some paper crowns for the girls to wear and then take home.

Can Vinegar Be Used In The Dishwasher

Vinegar cleans the dishes and the dishwasher safely.

The unmistakable tang of vinegar often graces the dinner table in salad dressings, relishes and pickled vegetables. However, vinegar is as useful as a cleaning ingredient as it is as a culinary ingredient. Vinegar cuts through hard-water stains and residual food stains, leaving both the dishes and the dishwasher sparkling clean. Does this Spark an idea?

White Vinegar

Vinegar comes in many varieties such as wine, balsamic, rice, herbal and many more. Most of these vinegars are used in cooking or pickling. White distilled vinegar with at least a 4 percent acidity is used for both cooking and cleaning. The acidity level is strong enough to cut through dirt, grime and germs, but the vinegar is clear and won't leave a stain behind.

Cleaning the Dishwasher

Cleaning the dishwasher may seem redundant because the inside of the dishwasher should be getting clean during each wash cycle. However, soap residue, leftover food stains and odors, and hard-water deposits are left behind from regular use. Pour 1 cup of white distilled vinegar into an empty dishwasher and run the dishwasher through a full cycle monthly.

Vinegar in the Wash Cycle

Hard water can leave a cloudy film on dishes and glasses. One and a half to 2 cups of white distilled vinegar poured into the bottom of the dishwasher before washing dishes on a full cycle will rinse away that hard water residue. Alternatively, you can run the dishes on the air-dry cycle first. Remove the metal items, then add 2 cups of white distilled vinegar to a dishwasher-safe glass or cup placed upright on the bottom rack. Run the dishes again on the air-dry cycle but without any more soap.

On the Outside

While vinegar is busy cleaning the dishes and the dishwasher on the inside, it can also clean the outside of the dishwasher. Spray tough spills and splatters on the outside of the dishwasher with full strength vinegar and wipe clean. For general cleaning of the dishwasher door, use a solution of one part vinegar to one part water.

Diy Invitation Seals

Design your own invitation seals for a personalized look.

You can personalize wedding, birthday bash, graduation open house or holiday party invitations with a customized envelope seal. Making an elegant-looking wax seal is possible with a few easy-to-use craft items. Sealing wax is available in a wide range of hues, so choose one that coordinates with the invitation style or the special-event color scheme. As a personalized touch, pick a seal design to reflect the theme of the wedding or party, or use the person of honor's initials.

Instructions

1. Place a sealed invitation envelope upside down on a flat surface.

2. Light the sealing wax stick's wick using a match or a lighter. Hold the stick at an angle over the envelope.

3. Form an outline by dripping melted wax onto the envelope in a circle that is a little larger than a metal seal. Fill the circle outline in with more melted wax. Blow out the flame on the wick and set the stick aside.

4. Spray a bit of cooking oil spray onto the face of the metal seal so the melted wax won't stick to it. Push the seal down into the melted wax to create a design.

5. Press the seal onto the wax for five to 10 seconds, or until the wax is hard. Remove the seal from the wax to reveal the design.

1970s Style Table Centerpieces

Turn back the clock to the 1970s with groovy table centerpiece ideas.

The 1970s represented a decade of changes. It marked the end of the Vietnam War and the Nixon Era. It witnessed a dramatic shift in popular music, hairstyles and fashion. Enjoy reveling in the nostalgia of the country's bicentennial, pet rocks and mood rings. Fans of retro design, as well as those simply planning a theme party, should consider a 1970s table centerpiece. Does this Spark an idea?

Fondue Pot

A fondue pot makes a one-of-a-kind vase for a flower arrangement.

Pick up a harvest gold or avocado green fondue pot and give it a place of prominence in the center of the dining room table. Serve up melted cheeses and bread squares or dipping chocolate and fruit. To really get guests mingling, set up several types of fondue at different tables. Not in the mood for fondue? For a different twist, fill a vintage fondue pot with water, insert a floral frog and arrange a far-out floral centerpiece.

Disco Ball

Add sparkle to the table with a mirrored disco ball.

What 1970s-themed table would be complete without a mirrored disco ball? Source party rental stores for a disco ball, or purchase one at a second-hand shop specializing in items from the decade. Place it in the center of the table as an instant conversation starter.

Smiley Face

A smiley face centerpiece brings back memories of an important pop culture fad.

Brighten a buffet or dining table with a cardboard cutout of this ubiquitous symbol of the 1970s. Cut out a large cardboard circle and create a base with two rectangular pieces of cardboard. Fold the base pieces in half and glue one on each side of the cardboard cutout for support. Paint the circle bright yellow and add the familiar grin and eyes with a black marker. For a birthday party, bake a round layer cake and decorate with yellow and black icing to recreate the well-known smiley face.

Ceramic Owl Collection

A grouping of ceramic owls capitalizes on a key 1970s design trend.

Owls, a popular design trend from the 1970s, make a wise choice for a decade-centric centerpiece. Go in search of ceramic owls of all shapes and sizes at local antique malls and thrift stores. An eclectic grouping of these feathered critters will look right at home as a centerpiece in a retro-inspired space.

Lava Lamp

A lava lamp adds authenticity to any 1970s tablescape.

Add mood lighting to a room and make a definite 1970s statement by placing an iconic lava lamp in the center of the table. While lamps may not be the first choice for a centerpiece, the lava lamp's place of importance in the design world makes it a natural for a 1970s party. Lava lamp reproductions are available from novelty shops and a variety of retailers. Avoid the hassle of electrical cords by purchasing an inexpensive cardboard lava lamp from a party supply store.

Flower Summer Dresses

A floral dress can keep you cool in the summer heat.

Floral dresses are ubiquitous in the summer months. Whether you're hosting a luau in your back yard, attending a wedding or going to the office, you can find a summer dress that works for the occasion. Does this Spark an idea?

Types

Floral summer dresses come in a variety of styles. A strapless floral dress is easy to slip on and off for a day at the beach. A halter-style floral dress exposes your back on hot summer days. For a bohemian look, choose a floor-length maxi dress.

Features

Floral summer dresses generally come in light, airy fabrics like cotton and linen. They come in a variety of shades, from a monochromatic, small floral prints suitable for work to brightly colored tropical prints perfect for a luau or day at the beach.

Considerations

Since some floral summer dresses can expose a lot of skin, it's important to consider dress code when choosing a dress to wear. A strapless sundress works well for a night on the town but exposes too much skin for the office. Turn casual floral sundresses into work-appropriate clothes by pairing them with cardigans; don't wear dresses that are shorter than knee length in a professional environment. Silk floral dresses work well for a wedding or semiformal event.

Hang Ten Birthday Party Supplies

If your child loves the surfing scene, a "hang ten" birthday party is sure to be a hit.

There are lots of decorating ideas and supplies to help you create a "hang ten" birthday party theme for your little surfing fan. "Hang ten" is the term used for the move wherein a surfer places all 10 toes over the end of the surfboard. A surfing-themed birthday party works best in summer, when your guests can splash around and play in the pool or yard. Does this Spark an idea?

Beach

To create a beachy scene, buy some bags of play sand, fill a sandbox with it and place it next to a wading pool or a swimming pool. Scatter beach toys and other outdor playthings, such as beach balls, flying discs and hula hoops, around the area. Spread towels on the sand to make it look even more like the beach and put up signs that say "Beach This Way," with an arrow pointing toward the sand.

Music

Music goes hand-in-hand with the surfing scene. The classic choices are the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean, although any beach-themed music or Hawaiian-style music will work well for the party. Alternatively, simply play your child's favorite music that's suitable for the guest list.

Food

Serve traditional summer and beach picnic food to keep in line with the theme. Suitable options include fruit kebabs and grilled hamburgers and hot dogs. Serve plenty of water and other drinks to keep the guests hydrated while they run around in the sun. If you're planning a sit-down meal, use surf- or beach-themed plates and napkins.

Wipeout Game

Create a large foam surfboard shape or use an old surfboard, if you have one or can borrow one. Set it in your back yard and have one swimsuit-clad child stand on it. The other kids get to throw buckets of water -- they can also use the garden hose -- and inflatable beach balls at her until she falls off. Another child takes her place until everyone has had a turn. To make the game a bit competitive, award a small prize to the child who takes the longest to "wipeout."

Hawaiian Birthday Party Ideas & Games

Have guests come in tropical clothing, such as aloha shirts.

Give your next birthday party a tropical flavor by using a Hawaiian theme. Don't worry about making it technically correct. Just be sure to use plenty of tropical fruits and exotic flowers. Guests will enjoy the illusion of being in the islands when they arrive at your house and are greeted by fun decorations and luau-type foods. Does this Spark an idea?

Invitations

Make tropical-themed invitations by printing them from your computer. Find a design that you like, or create your own design using tikis, leis, tropical flowers, palm trees or other Hawaiian designs. You can also deliver your invitation attached to an inexpensive flip-flop shoe, a colorful small drink umbrella or a floral lei. If it is a pool or beach party, emphasize a water theme with pictures of Hawaiian beaches, surfers or outriggers.

Decorations

Use a brightly-colored floral tablecloth on your table, or cover your table with a large bamboo mat. If you can't find a mat for the table, try a roll-up bamboo window shade in a natural color from a home improvement store. Put fresh pineapples and coconuts in a large wooden salad bowl as a centerpiece. Hang a fishing net and decorate it with plastic fish and crabs, starfish, cork floats and floral accents such as leis and tropical flowers. Place tiki torches around the patio or lawn for an outdoor party. Have guests come in brightly colored aloha shirts, muumuus or any other Hawaiian-style clothing they might have. Give everyone a lei at the door and give each woman or girl a flower for her hair.

Food

Although roasting a whole pig is traditional fare for a Hawaiian luau, most people don't have the means to do so. Instead, make shish kebabs, coconut shrimp, trays of fresh fruit, fruit kebabs, poi (or use rice pudding as an easy substitute), chicken wings, meatballs in sweet and sour sauce and pulled pork sandwiches. Drinks can include fruit punch, lemonade and, for the adults, tropical drinks such as mai tais and margaritas. A coconut birthday cake is perfect for a luau party, but strawberry or pineapple cakes work well too.

Games

No Hawaiian party would be complete without a few rounds of the limbo. In this game, players bend backwards and try to walk under a stick that gets lowered every round until only one person can make it under. Another good game is a hula hoop contest, especially if the contestants wear grass skirts. For an ice breaker, translate everybody's name into a Hawaiian name, and have the guests wear name tags with their translated names on them. Near the end of the party, have everyone remove their name tags and then have guests make a list of all the Hawaiian names they can remember. Whoever remembers the most gets a prize.

Creative Island School Projects

The country of Sweden is surrounded by approximately 221,800 islands.

Learning about landforms, and islands in particular, can lend itself to many enjoyable projects. An island is any landform smaller than a continent that is completely surrounded by water. Islands can be close to land, like Cuba, or in the middle of an ocean, like the Azores. Having students create their own islands or making an island with ant inhabitants is a fun and educational way to learn more about this landform. Studying the island cultures of various island nations is another way to help children learn and retain information about islands.

Make an Island

Read a book related to islands, such as "Treasure Island" or "Lord of the Flies." As part of the lesson, study characteristics of islands, and challenge students to make their own miniature islands. Recommend that students create an island inside a small plastic tub using rocks, dirt, sand, clumps of grass and sticks for trees. Encourage the students to decorate their islands to reflect a scene in the book.

Ant Island

Dig up a black ant hill, and put it in a large glass jar. Fill in the empty spaces with loose dirt. Do not cover the jar. Place the jar inside a plastic tub filled with water. The ants will walk on the top of the jar and even on the sides but will not cross the moat. You can also place other smaller jars of dirt in the tub and make bridges to see if the ants cross over and repopulate the new "islands."

Hawaiian Culture

Another creative project for a unit on islands is to study different island cultures, such as that of Hawaii. Surprise your students by wearing a grass skirt and lei while teaching about Hawaii. Have a class luau, and ask the students to bring in traditional Hawaiian foods, such as poi. You can even clear some space in the classroom to teach the class to hula dance as a nice break from worksheets and book work.

The Island Nation of Japan

Another island culture that is enjoyable to study is the island nation of Japan. Younger students will enjoy making paper lanterns to decorate the classroom. Students can learn about the differences in plant and animal life on the island. For a craft, take small branches and pink tissue paper to make blossom trees with the students. You can also explore religious and cultural differences. Use small Styrofoam trays of sand and rocks selected from the school yard to create miniature zen gardens.

Gateway to Freedom

Students can learn about how Ellis Island was an entrance way into the United States. During the unit, they can learn about genealogy and research their family trees. Discuss the myth of how names were changed at Ellis Island and how names were really changed over time. Have students research their own last name to see if it has changed, or make up variations of their names for fun.

Condo Resorts In Kauai Hawaii

The island of Kauai features picturesque beaches such as Poipu.

Kauai is the northwestern-most large island of the Hawaiian chain. The shape of this 552-square mile speck in the Pacific is a near-perfect circle.

Nicknamed the Garden Isle, Kauai is about a 20-minute flight from Honolulu. Condo resorts can be found in various spots around the island.

Kiahuna Plantation & The Beach Bungalows

Located in Poipu on the southern tip of Kauai, the area around Kiahuna Plantation boasts a championship golf course, the National Tropical Botanical Gardens and the island's first sugar plantation. Also nearby is the famous Spouting Horn, where water sprays high in the air after rushing through a lava tube. The resort itself features a large pool with a waterslide, multiple tennis courts and restaurant. Just across the street at Poipu Shopping Village are more restaurants; also, Kiahuna offers a grocery-shopping and delivery service. All condos are either one or two bedrooms and include a full kitchen, private porch, WiFi and daily maid service. Some condos are right on the beach; others are just a short walk away.

Hanalei Bay Resort

On the northern tip of Kauai is Hanalei Bay Resort, situated in the town of Princeville. Renowned for its natural beauty, this area was the site of filming for the movie "South Pacific." A Fodor's Choice Gold 2010 Award Winner, this oceanside resort is also close to a number of restaurants and shops. Within the resort guests will find a fitness center, eight tennis courts and two swimming pools. Walk to beach or be shuttled in a golf cart. For a nominal fee guests can participate in activities such as ukulele lessons, yoga, hula lessons, pilates and surfing. Most of the condos are privately owned and have full kitchens. They range in size from hotel-style rooms to three-bedrooms units. Maid service is not included but is available for a fee.

Waipouli Beach Resort

Waipouli Beach Resort is nestled between the towns of Kapa'a and Wailua on the eastern shore of Kauai. The resort sits right on the beach. Just down the road in Coconut Marketplace and Kauai Village visitors will find boutique shops, art galleries, restaurants, grocery stores and wellness centers. At the resort, work out in the fitness center or grab a bite to eat under the shade of a tiki hut at the on-site Oasis restaurant. Be pampered at the spa, where professionals offer traditional Hawaiian Lomi Lomi and Pohaku hot stone treatment, deep tissue massages and volcanic clay facials using organic ingredients. Multiple sizes of condos are offered, the largest of which is a two-bedroom three-bathroom unit. Most condos come with full kitchens, balconies and flat-screen televisions. WiFi is limited to the lobby area but condos are equipped with wired Internet service. Daily maid service is included.

Birthday Invitation Ideas For Adults

Party invitations can be used to set the theme for the event. For instance, if you are hosting a luau, the invitations could have a beach or Hawaiian theme or design. In addition to announcing the party's theme, invitations detail the reason for the party, its location, any age requirements, attire preference or other instructions. Invitations may be purchased at retail and party stores, or designed on a computer. Does this Spark an idea?

Photo Invitations

Photos create a personal look for your party invitations. Use a photo of the guest of honor, of yourself as host or a personal photo that reflects the theme of the party. Using personal photos can tell guests who the party is for and what type of party they should be ready for. For instance, a photo of the guest of honor in swimming gear can alert your guests to be ready for a pool party.

Bar Invites

If the adult birthday party is being held at a bar or venue that serves alcohol, consider using an invitations with a mixed-drink design. You can also use a template of a bar or restaurant scene, available online or you can create your own, and insert a photo of the guest of honor or yourself sitting at a table or bar, with event information included in the background.

Concert or Sporting Ticket Invitations

Create invitations that look like event tickets, such as those to a concert or sporting events. Include party information in the spaces usually used for name, date and location of event, as well as contact information for R.S.V.P.

Airplane Birthday Party Ideas

Children of all ages are fascinated by planes and air travel. For your child's next birthday, consider throwing an airplane birthday party. Creative ideas will really help your party take off. Does this Spark an idea?

Invitations

Write the invitation information on sheets of paper that measure 8 by 8 1/2 inches. Fold them into the shapes of paper airplanes, and stuff them into envelopes.

Decorations

Hang cardboard clouds and airplanes from fishing wire. You can also hang signs that read "Concourse A" or "Gate 32."

Food

Serve food that is sold in individual packets, such as crackers and pretzels. Serve drinks to the children from a tea cart that has been set up to look like a beverage cart.

Games

Run a pack-the-suitcase relay during which children have to pack a case, carry it to the other end of the room and back, and then dump it out. Play "bus, bus, plane" instead of "duck, duck, goose."

Favors

Have a baggage claim area where the children can pick up their favors. Fill bags with such items as small plastic airplanes, playing cards, packages of crackers or pretzels, or airplane key chains.

Cake

Make or buy cupcakes that are frosted sky blue. Place a small toy airplane on each one.

Do It Yourself Feather Skirt

Feathers can turn an old skirt into a posh new accessory.

Feather skirts offer a cool, modern alternative to fringe. They offer iridescent shine and movement to your skirt without looking dated or tacky. Feathers also come in a wide variety of colors and patterns, allowing you to go earthy with neutral feathers or totally glam with neon colors. One of the best things about feathered skirts is that you can make them at home. If you have a dated or faded skirt that still fits like a glove, recycle it into a new, go-to piece. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Spread your skirt out on a clean, flat surface. Skirts with structure reaching no lower than your knees work best for this project. Polyester blends, thick knits and denim are also easy to manipulate.

2. Slide a piece of scrap cardboard into the skirt. This prevents you from accidentally gluing the sides of your skirt together.

3. Unroll a length of feather costume trim along the front bottom hem of your skirt. Snip to length and run a bead of liquid stitch along the underside of the trim. Press down gently and pin the trim into place. The pins keep the feathers in place until the liquid stitch dries.

4. Add a second row of feathers about 4 inches above the first. The feathers in the second row should overlap the feathers in the first row by about 1 1/2 inches.

5. Continue adding rows of feathers to the front of the skirt, pinning as you go. When finished, flip the skirt over and add rows of feathers to the back. Overlap the ends of the rows in the back of the skirt with those in the front. That way, you have no gaps in the trim.

6. Let the liquid stitch dry overnight. Remove all of the pins and pair your posh new skirt with stylish tights and a cute sweater or denim jacket.

Christmas Decoration Projects With Wood Cutting

Wooden Christmas ornaments adorn both indoor and outdoor trees.

Christmas is a time of year that can inspire creativity as whimsical scenes commemorating the season begin to appear everywhere. Christmas decoration projects are only limited by your imagination and can range from simple indoor designs to large, outdoor landscapes. Wood makes a good material for use in Christmas decorations--from ornaments to manger scenes. Creating these projects often involves cutting the wood, so be sure to have appropriate tools on hand before starting. Does this Spark an idea?

Themed Tree

Christmas trees are often designed with a certain theme in mind. These themed trees may be decorated with a similar type of ornament. A tree filled with painted wooden cutouts makes a good Christmas decorating project. Choose the theme of your wooden ornaments. Ideas include sports, music, winter and animals. Use a saw to cut out different wooden shapes related to your chosen theme. Paint the wooden decorations and hang from your tree. Consider making different bunches of themed wooden ornaments for trees in different rooms of your house.

Manger

A manger scene is a classic Christmas decoration that can be displayed outdoors on your lawn or indoors. Wooden manger displays can be created in sizes from small, tabletop displays to life-size outdoor scenes. For a small display, use plywood, Popsicle sticks or wood scraps to form the manger. If you're making an outdoor display, cedar makes a good choice and, over time, creates a weathered look. One consideration for outdoor displays is to make the manger with cut wooden slats. This allows for greater visibility of the baby Jesus.

Christmas Village

Build a Christmas village from wood to display in your yard. Each building can be formed from plywood, cut to the appropriate size and shape. You can paint the wood buildings to be anything from Santa's workshop to a quaint church. Set up your village and embellish with Christmas lights for added visibility in the dark. Lighted figures also add a bit of life to the village.

Christmas Card Wall Display

Christmas cards are exchanged between friends and family each holiday season. Many times, the cards are elaborately decorated. A Christmas card tree provides a way to display the cards. Attach cut, wooden dowels of different lengths to a single ribbon, which serves as the trunk. The cards are attached to the dowels and the tree can be hung on the wall.

Cute Wagon Decorating Ideas For The 4th Of July

Decorate your child's wagon for Independence Day.

Many towns hold parades on the 4th of July. Kids are welcome to participate and many decorate their wagons or bicycles as a miniature parade float. Help your child decorate his wagon with red, white and blue so he'll be ready to celebrate our country on the 4th of July. Does this Spark an idea?

Boat Decoration

Use cardboard and duct tape to make a cool boat float out of your child's wagon. Tape the cardboard around the sides of the wagon to completely cover the wagon. Bend a piece of cardboard to make the bow for the front of the wagon.

Use red, white and blue duct tape to attach the cardboard to the wagon and also for decorative purposes. Cover the cardboard completely with the duct tape to make the boat look festive. Add a couple of flags to your boat float for decoration.

Independence Pride

Use lots of red, white and blue streamers, flags and balloons to deck out your child's wagon. Attach flags to each corner of the wagon, and cut streamers to fly behind the wagon and around the handle of the wagon. Make banners for each side of the wagon that say "Happy 4th of July" or "America." Use curling ribbon to tape on to the banners for a decoration. Stick red pinwheels on the front of the wagon's corners with tape.

Stars and Stripes

Purchase or make shiny silver stars for the wagon. Layer streamers around the wagon's edge in alternating colors of red, white and blue. The streamers should look like stripes. Tape the stars all over the stripes for a stars and stripes wagon theme. Place a large star on each wheel, and wrap streamers around the wagon's handle and place little stars over the streamers. Tape a big flag at the back of the wagon to complete the theme.

Birthday Cake Decorating Instructions

Basic techniques can be used to create a birthday cake.

The birthday cake is a fixture at a birthday party that is appreciated by all who attend. It should be both delicious and festive to celebrate the occasion. If you are just starting out in cake decorating, then you may need a good starting point to create a general birthday cake. With a few tips, you can create a birthday cake just like the bakeries, but without the high cost. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Place a frosted square cake on a cake decorating table. Make sure the cake is centered on the turntable to make decorating easier.

2. Fill three pastry bags with prepared buttercream. Dye buttercream a different color from the base frosting of the cake by adding a few drops of gel coloring and mixing until the color is blended through.

3. Use the pastry bag with the small round tip to write a birthday message on the top of the cake. Keep the message centered and even by first outlining the message with a toothpick in the icing on top of the cake. Use the pastry bag to trace over the outlined message.

4. Place small dots using the same pastry bag at each corner edge of the cake. Place a second layer of dots on the edge of the cake in between the first set of dots. These will be used as markers for swags on the cake.

5. Use the pastry bag with the rose tip or ruffle tip to create swags. Point the large opening of the pastry tip downward as you start at one dot, and slowly squeeze the buttercream from the pastry bag in an upside down arch toward the right. Meet the arch up at the second dot. Repeat the swag motion around the rest of the cake until all of the dots have swags.

6. Use the pastry bag with the star tip to create a border on the top and bottom of the cake. Start at the top right corner of the square cake. Lightly press the buttercream from the pastry bag with the star tip facing directly down on the cake's surface. Release the pressure off the pastry bag and lift up to leave a star impression. Repeat this pattern around the top edge of the cake and then on the bottom edge of the cake.

7. Finish the cake with sprinkles on top around the message, as well as on the bottom border of the cake. Place the cake in a cake dome or box to keep fresh until serving.

Games To Learn Vocabulary

Dictionaries are not the only source for vocabulary enhancement.

Games are an important part of the learning process during early childhood, especially during language lessons. When children have to memorize new words every day, sometimes studying from the textbook is not the most efficient method. Educational games, which will help students enhance their vocabulary, can be a rewarding activity for teachers and students at school or parents and children at home.

Find the Pairs

Create eight flashcards depicting various objects of a theme, such as construction tools, body parts or sea animals. Write down the corresponding word for each object on separate eight flashcards and align them face down, into four rows and four columns. Children will take turns selecting two flashcards at a time, in order to match the object with its word. If they are unsuccessful, they will have to keep the cards face down; otherwise, the two flashcards will be removed from the rows.

Word Search

Children will search through rows and columns of randomly scattered letters to find meaningful words and circle them. Games of word search are ubiquitous in newspapers and magazines, as well as the Internet; choose searches suitable for the children's vocabulary level. Set a timer and ask them to find as many words as they can before the time is up. At the end of the search, show them any remaining hidden words they missed and explain their meaning.

Word Mime

Write down verbs on small cards and place them in a bucket. There should one card for each student. Kids will draw a card from the bucket and must act out the verb. For example, the student may dig with an imaginary spade, run or climb. Set a limit of five guesses and have children raise their hands to give their guesses, to avoid everyone shouting out the answers at the same time.

"Scrabble"

"Scrabble" is a classic word game that can also help improve children's vocabulary. It can be used as the center of a classroom activity, where kids will take turns to create words on the game's board and gain points according to the game's rules. When children seem to have a problem making a word, help them--reveal the word or explain why they can't make a word with the letters they have. The main focus of this activity should be on learning new words and mastering old ones, not winning the game.

Food Vocabulary Games

Food vocabulary games teach the names of edible substances like vegetables.

Vocabulary games can help teach new words, expand language skills or learn a new language. Food vocabulary games deal specifically with words that relate to or describe edible substances. These games are designed to be educational and often don't rely on detailed graphics or audio for their presentation. Instead, game play is kept simple and easy to understand to avoid confusion.

Hidden Object Games

Hidden object games feature a list of items you have to fine. The objects are hidden in the scene and, once you find one of them, you cross it off the list. "The Food Game" is a food vocabulary game that shares similarities with this genre. Food items are spread across a cluttered kitchen and you have three tries to get all the food listed. Click on the wrong food, and you lose a chance. The game can be played for free online.

Text Games

The "Food Name Game" is an example of a text game, which only uses text and few or no images. These games are played online and do not require any special plug-ins. You are given a cryptic clue and have to name the type of food associated with it. If you think you know the answer, click the link to see if you are correct. You are allowed one clue with a small photo to help you out. These types of games are best played with two or more players.

Memory Match Games

In memory match games, you are presented with a series of face-down cards. Your goal is to match pairs by turning them over two at a time. If the two cards are a match, you score points and the cards remain face up. If they are not a match, the cards are turned face-down and you need to remember what their locations are. The game is finished when all cards have been matched into pairs. "Food Detective" is a variation of this type of game where you have to match food to their respective food groups. This means there are two types of cards you can reveal, one with the name of a food group and one with a picture of a type of food and its name. Matching a food to its food group will get you points, like matching chicken to the protein group, for example.

Matching Games

Matching or "arrows" games share similarities with the memory match games but take the guesswork out of it. You can scroll through pictures using arrow keys shown on the screen and then scroll through words to match the picture with the word. One of these games can be found on the Many Things website. A picture of food is shown on the left side of the screen and a food name on the right. You have to match the two by using the arrows and pressing "check" to see if you are right. You will be shown how many times you were correct out of the amount of times you played.

Seniors can take part in aerobic exercises in short bursts of around 20 minutes, as noted by the Safe Sport website. Aerobics classes of various kinds are taught everywhere, but those best suited for senior citizens are less intense activities such as water aerobics. Seniors work out in a swimming pool at a leisure center or similar venue, under the instruction of a group exercise leader. The exercises are gentle and unlikely to endanger an individual's joints, as compared to more strenuous activities, because being immersed in water eases the strain on the body's joints. As a result, the senior will feel less soreness and fatigue after a water aerobics session.

Yoga

One problem facing senior citizens is reduced flexibility. Joints become stiff, and illnesses such as arthritis may develop. Any exercise that can help improve flexibility is desirable. The meditative art of yoga is noted by the Safe Sport website for increasing flexibility.

Older people are less likely to be able to complete all of the yoga positions used by the young; however, yoga exercises can be adapted to suit the needs and ability of the individual. With the help of a yoga instructor, senior citizens can choose a routine featuring yoga postures that they are capable of achieving.

Yoga brings a wealth of physical and mental benefits. Yoga can help individuals sleep better by relaxing the muscles, according to the Oxford Yoga website, and can also help to ward off stress and anxiety.

Name That Tune

This music game challenges the memories of senior citizens. To play, you'll need a group of seniors and a leader to run the game. The leader prepares beforehand a list of tracks from the 1930s and 1940s and burns the selections onto a CD. The leader plays the first few notes of each track, then allows the seniors a moment to guess the song. If no one does, the leader presses "play" again, and the seniors hear the next few seconds of music. The leader repeats this until someone calls the right answer. You can give a prize to the person with the most correct guesses.

Bridal Shower Table Centerpiece Idea

Designing bridal shower centerpieces

Creating bridal shower centerpieces provides many of the decorations for a bridal shower. Consider putting your creative talents to work and making this a do-it-yourself project to save some money. Pick a theme for the bridal shower and use this as your inspiration. Consider the location of the shower and the resources it provides. Remember bridal shower centerpieces don't have to be elaborate masterpieces; simple, traditional designs and creative, unique designs can make a statement.

Follow the Theme

Select a theme for the bridal shower and carry this theme on invitations, decorations and table centerpieces. Choosing a theme can make planning and decorating easier because you have a plan to follow. Think about the bride's hobbies, such as traveling, wine or fashion. Consider using her favorite colors or selecting a wedding shower theme such as kitchen gadgets or a couples themed party such as a '70s disco. Plan the bridal shower centerpieces around the theme--small trunks with guide books, language dictionaries and pictures of the bride's honeymoon destination. These are helpful gifts to the bride and her future husband.

Use the Location

Use the location of the bridal shower to help create centerpieces. Play off the natural beauty and resources of a location when thinking of bridal shower centerpieces. Botanical gardens, parks or even your back yard offer peaceful, natural settings. Consider a few green plants, a basket of fresh fruit or flowers from your garden. Beaches provide a beautiful scene and natural resources for table centerpieces. Purchase fish bowls and fill with sand and shells. Search the craft store for extras such as mermaids or boats. Locations such as bakeries, restaurants or hotels often incorporate the centerpieces with the cost of the venue.

Traditional and Simple

Consider a traditional bridal shower table centerpiece such as flowers, candles and balloons. Select colors matching the season, the wedding colors or some of the bride's favorite colors. Tie balloons around a vase of fresh flowers. Make copies of pictures of the couple to use as bridal shower centerpieces. Get baby pictures, shots from when they were teenagers, college photographs and engagement pictures. Place edible creations in the center of each table. Try monogrammed cookies or a tower of decorated cupcakes. Not only do they provide a sweet treat, but they are also an eye-catching visual.

Great Summer Party Ideas

Have a sushi and sake party during the summer.

Summer is the season of sun, fun and parties. You can have many different types of summer parties, depending on whether you have a yard or a pool available. Standard barbecues that take place in the backyard are always fun. However, try some great summer party ideas that your friends and family will not expect. When you are planning your summer party, consider the interests of the people attending and whether children will be invited. Does this Spark an idea?

Sake and Sushi

Go with a Japanese theme by having a sake and sushi summer party. Guests will be delighted with this innovative and upscale party. It is ideal for a daytime party, as well as a night-time soiree. Unless you are skilled at making sushi, consider picking up sushi platters from your favorite restaurant or a Japanese grocery store. Also, purchase the sake from the same place. This party should be for adults only.

Cupcakes

Celebrate the onset of summer by having a cupcake party. Invite parents and kids to your party. Options include making the cupcakes yourself or purchasing them from a local bakery. Include cupcakes in a variety of flavors, such as chocolate, vanilla, funfetti and red velvet. If you are baking them, frost them with frosting in bright colors, such as yellow and pink. Create summer designs on them, including pictures of the sun, palm trees, flip flops and butterflies. If you are purchasing the cupcakes, the bakery will create those designs if you order them as such. For an added touch, create a cupcake designing area for the kids. Include plain cupcakes and lay out all of the decorations needed to frost and create designs on them.

Camp Out

A summer party idea that is ideal for kids is to have a camp out with them. Of course, some adults will need to be included as well. Camping is ideal while it's warm outside. Start the evening with a barbecue and grill hot dogs, hamburgers and vegetables. Get the tents up and set up camp. Start off the evening by playing music and charades. Spend the rest of the time playing cards and telling stories.

Movie Night

A summer party idea for adults is to have movie night outside. If your friends are near your own age range, watch an older movie, that was popular while you were in high school. Provide beer and popcorn to your guests. A great twist on this idea is to use a projector, or rent one if you don't own one, and watch the movies outside on blankets or in lawn chairs.
