Etiquette For Writing Baby Shower Invitations

Baby showers are a way for family and friends to support expectant parents with the things they will need for their new baby. They are a lot of fun...and hard work. Ensure that the mom-to-be has a full house for her shower by sending out easy-to-read invitations that are timely and that help guests know what to buy and find the event. Does this Spark an idea?

Baby Shower Details

Include the sort of information that you would for any party invitation: the name of the mother-to-be, the date and time of the shower, the location and the the name of the hostess. Also be sure to let guests know RSVP (email, phone, enclosed response card) and a date by which they need to do so.

Double-Check the Guest List

Check with the mother-to-be to make sure the guest list is complete and that you have accurate addresses for everyone. It is also probably a good idea to get phone numbers for the guests in case the mother-to-be goes into labor early and the shower has to be rescheduled.

Maps and Registry Lists

Be sure to include a map to the shower location as well as the names, address and websites of where the mother-to-be has registered for baby gifts.

Add Extra Details

If the mother-to-be knows the gender of the baby, ask her if you can include that information in the invitations; this will make your guests' shopping much easier. Also, if the baby's nursery will be decorated in a specific theme, be sure to let your guests know.

Mail the Invitations

If the shower is going to be very large, if there are going to be a lot of out-of-town guests, or if you have to give a caterer a headcount, make sure to mail the invites six weeks before the shower. Otherwise, four weeks should suffice. If the invitation is heavy, have it weighed at the post office. Don't make your guests pay postage due because you didn't use enough stamps.
