Backyard Wedding Ideas

Decorate a trellis for your tea party wedding.

A backyard wedding is a cost-effective, intimate event, and if you plan well, you can have all the style and charm of a more formal wedding. A backyard wedding is ideal for a casual couple who likes to do things themselves. When you are planning a backyard wedding of your own, try some engaging and creative themes that can help you set the stage.

Tropical Backyard Wedding

A tropical backyard wedding involves using plenty of bright colors to transport your guests to a tropical paradise. Dress the bridesmaids in sarongs and let the groomsmen wear sandals. Use brightly colored fruit to replace expensive flowers. Oranges, apples and bananas are all excellent choices for a tropically themed backyard wedding. Hand out Hawaiian leis at the door and serve your guests an outdoor barbecue.

Nighttime Backyard Wedding

A nighttime wedding in the backyard allows you to escape the heat of the day and it also makes the less desirable features of the yard less noticeable. Use white Christmas lights on the bushes and trees to supplement the main lights and hang paper lanterns around the site of the main ceremony. Match the paper lanterns to the color theme of the wedding, or use paper lanterns in a wide variety of colors. For a dramatic effect, have the bridal party carry lit candles or lanterns rather than flowers.

Country-Style Backyard Wedding

If you have a large backyard and you love country decor, consider holding a country-style wedding. Use straw bales for seating and set up picnic tables full of hearty country food such as potato salads, meat loaf and corn on the cob. Get a country band to provide the music, and let the groomsmen come in jeans and cowboy shirts.

Tea-Party Backyard Wedding

Tea-party backyard weddings are perfect for the bride and groom who love the Victorian era. Have the entire wedding party dress in Victorian-era clothing and encourage the guests to dress the part as well. Serve dainty cucumber or watercress sandwiches, and have several different types of tea available. For wedding favors, give out teacups and packets of nice tea.
