Famous Hawaiian Shirts

Leis and Hawaiian shirts are typical luau attire.

Hawaiian style shirts are typically button-up, short sleeved and brightly colored. The shirts are an appropriate style choice for a luau themed party, an exotic vacation or a simple summer day. The most famous and widely recognized Hawaiian shirts come in a variety of patterns that all fall under the standard Hawaiian shirt umbrella. Does this Spark an idea?

Repeating Prints

The Hawaiian shirt, also called the Aloha shirt, often has a bright, background solid color, such as orange or purple, and a repeating pattern printed over it. The pattern can be a simple flower, leaf or palm tree or something more complex. A more elaborate repeating pattern will be a small image of scenery, such as an island. The scene is printed repeatedly to cover the entire shirt and is formatted in a variety of angles and positions.

Positioning

The placement and positioning of the Hawaiian shirt imagery also categorizes the type of Hawaiian shirt it is. Similar to the repeating pattern shirts, some Hawaiian shirts have the patterns distributed in columns or along the bottom border of the shirt only. The shirts will use the repeating image of a scene or an item, like a flower, and repeat it in a variety of angles and positions down a row. The pattern can also be repeated along the bottom of the shirt as an extended scene. For example, the repeat of a tropical palm tree image along the bottom hem of a shirt creates the look of a forest growing up from the base of the shirt.

One Image

In lieu of the repeating images scattered over the shirt or in uniform columns or rows, some Hawaiian shirts can also bear one large image. The vibrant color scheme as well as the tropical and exotic theme for the scenes causes the shirts to still be widely recognizable as a Hawaiian shirt, even though they do not bear the patterns of the above two examples. The scene portrayed could be that of a rain forest, an island or even a colorful underwater glimpse of tropical fish. The key to this shirt is that the image must stretch from one hem to the other, from the bottom to the top and side to side.
