Cake Decorating Ideas With Fondant

Fondant is a fun and colorful way to decorate cakes of any shape. It may be a little trickier to use than traditional icing, but the finished effect is much smoother and professional-looking. If you are a beginner and want to try these ideas, use pre-made and pre-colored fondant, which can be purchased at a craft of cake store. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Lettering

If you are a beginner and are nervous about your first try with fondant, start simple. After baking the cake, frost it with regular icing. Then buy pre-made and pre-rolled fondant in the colors of your choice. Use letter cookie cutters to cut out a happy birthday message. Lay the letters on the cake before the icing dries so they will stick.

Polka-Dot Cake

A decorative cake to make with fondant is a polka-dot cake. Cover the cake with a layer of fondant. Then use another color of fondant and cut out circles of different sizes. Use a small dab of buttercream icing to adhere them all over the cake. To make a more elaborate cake, make a smaller second layer and decorate it with two new colors.

Chessboard

Make your cake look like a chess board. Take a square cake and cover it in white fondant. Cut squares out of black fondant, and use a small dab of buttercream icing to stick the black squares on the white in a chessboard pattern. Then, mold chess pieces out of the leftover black and white fondants and stick them onto the top of the cake. To make a checkerboard, use red instead of white and make circles instead of chess pieces.

Disco Ball Cake

If you are feeling more adventurous and confidant in your ability to use fondant, make a disco-ball cake. Use gray fondant and cut 1 inch squares using a fondant cutter. After the squares have had a day to dry, bake a round cake in a Wilton sports-ball pan. When the cake is cool, give it a coat of buttercream icing. Cut a circle with a 3-inch diameter out of the fondant and smooth it down over the cake. Then starting at the bottom of the ball, use small dabs of icing as glue and work to attach the small gray squares. Use scissors to trim the squares to get them to fit, if necessary. Dust the entire cake in edible silver luster dust after the squares have had time to set.
