Creative Do It Yourself Birthday Cakes For Kids

Birthday cakes become the foundation of the child's wishes.

Birthday cakes are an integral part of any child's party. An exciting cake sets the tone of the party. Ordering a cake from a bakery or grocery store is expensive, and creative cakes in unique shapes or colors are even costlier, out of range of many families. But many creative cakes are easy to make at home. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Bugs Galore

If you have a bug enthusiast in your home, you can make a bug-themed cake. For a ladybug cake, bake a cake in a rounded pan, or trim a traditional two-layer cake into a dome. Frost the cake with red icing and add large black spots. To create a butterfly cake, cut a traditional two-layer cake in half. Switch the two halves so that the rounded sides touch and the flat, cut sides are on the outside. Coat the cut sides with frosting. Decorate the top of the cake to show the butterfly's body and wings.

Nature

Create a forest log cake. Bake a jellyroll cake and cover it with frosting. Roll up the cake and frost with brown icing. Cut the frosting to imitate the lines of bark on a log. Place small plastic bugs on the cake log. Or, give your child a magical birthday with a rainbow cake. Cut a round two-layer cake in half and place the straight edge on the plate. Designate one side as the front. Follow the curve of the cake with red, yellow green and blue icing. Cover the top with gold sprinkles. Ice a cupcake and cover the top with more gold sprinkles. Pace this tiny pot of gold at the end of your rainbow.

Food

Create a hamburger cake with three layers. Bake two round yellow cakes and one chocolate round cake. Place one yellow cake on the bottom and frost with light brown icing. Frost thee sides of the chocolate layer with chocolate frosting and place on top of the yellow cake layer. Add the top layer. If necessary, trim the top layer to give the bun a rounded look. Frost the top with light brown icing. Add green and red frosting to simulate lettuce and tomato. Slice strips of pound cake to resemble French fries. Place the strips around the "hamburger."

Objects

Make a cake that's a present all by itself. Stack two square cake layers and cover with a light layer of frosting. Roll out fondant to ¼-inch thickness. Drape the fondant over the cake and press into the frosting. Fold the fondant sheet to resemble wrapping paper. Roll out a second piece of fondant and cut into 2-inch strips. Place the strips over the cake to represent ribbon. Fold additional strips to make the bow. Or, make your child the king or queen of a sandcastle cake. Stack two square or rectangular cake layers and frost with tan frosting. Mix butter and light brown sugar and press into the frosting. Coat waffle ice cream cones with the brown sugar mixture and place on top for towers.
