When visiting central New Jersey, there are several dinning experiences to explore. One of these is the German American restaurant experience. As many German immigrants have settled in the area, their unique culture and cuisine can be found in area restaurants. The true German cuisine can best be explored, however, in the more specialized restaurants of the area. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Helmers' Restaurant
Established in 1936, this family-owned and operated restaurant is located on Washington Street in the town of Hoboken, just across the bay from New York. The restaurant was originally owned by the Helmer family after they immigrated to the United States in the 1930's, but was sold to another German immigrant family, the Lueders in the 1940's. Along with the expected German specialty cuisine, the dinner can also enjoy selections of seafood, steak, soups and salads as well.

Black Forest Inn
The Black Forest Inn of Stanhope is a family owned and operated German Continental restaurant located in Sussex county, New Jersey. This restaurant offers the expected German cuisine as well as a Continental European twist to some of the more well known dishes. Offering both on and off site catering, this restaurant has something for everyone, including an all you can eat buffet serving patrons both lunch and dinner.

Schneiders' is a casual lunch and dinner restaurant offering many authentic German dishes as well as some Romanian cuisine. This family run restaurant is best known for traditional German home style cooking as well as the personal touch the owners put into the service of their many loyal customers. The owner even offers to "pick you up" if you dock at one of the local marinas.
