Candy isn't the only thing you can put in goody bags for preschoolers.
It's the party tradition that every preschooler eagerly awaits -- the goody bag! As a parent, you know that guests at your child's birthday party will be expecting to go home with something special. You can buy goody bags ready-made or create your own. The only thing limiting you is your imagination and the interests of this particular age group.
Canvas Totes
For a durable, reusable goody bag, buy small canvas totes at a craft store or online. Use fabric paint to decorate each bag and write the recipient's name on it. Allow plenty of time for the paint to dry before filling the bags will items that fall under the party's theme. For example, for a sports party, you could fill the bags with baseball cards, bubble gum, football-shaped pencil erasers, and super-bounce balls.
Flower Pots
Dollar stores frequently sell miniature clay flower pots. You can use them as a goody "bag" and fill them with seed packets, flower-shaped lollipops and multi-colored crayons. Older preschoolers (ages 4 and 5) can paint their own flower pots as a party activity, while younger children can use stickers to decorate their flower pots.
Bandanas
Bandanas are another reusable option to use for a goody bag. Lay the bandana flat with the "wrong" side facing up. Place items in the center, gather up the corners and tie it up with rope or ribbon to create a pouch. Bandanas are sold in various designs and colors -- find some that fit the party's theme. For example, for a pirate party, use a skull-and-crossbones bandana and fill it with chocolate coins, ring pops, eye patches and candy necklaces.
Brown Bag It
Jazz up plain brown lunch bags with stamps, stickers, crayons and markers. The children can decorate their own bag in any way they like. This option is ideal for the children to use when gathering treats that scatter after a piñata is broken.
