Decorating Hawaiian Style

Tiki masks give any room a Hawaiian flair.

Hawaiian decorating lends itself to the idea of relaxation associated with life on the islands. This style of decor is bright, cheerful, laid back and easy to accomplish. It begins with the simplicity and peacefulness found in nature and builds upon the unique aspects of Hawaiian cultures. Knowing work with colors, textures and objects will allow you to create a Hawaiian style in your home that is just what you wanted. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose comfortable, informal furniture. The Hawaiian look is more about relaxing in the natural environment than anything else, so the look needs to reflect a sense of ease. Rattan, wicker and bamboo furniture are associated with this look, as well as lightly stained woods. Choose bright cushions to enhance a room. Adorn furniture with pillows and throws made from fabrics with botanical patterns.

2. Dress up your rooms with bright, tropical colors. The Hawaiian look is defined by bold colors you will find on the islands. Forest green, deep-sea blue, sunset orange and banana yellow are just a few colors you can add to your palette. Adding earth tones, such as brown or cream, help give the look a more unified feel.

3. Add natural textures to your rooms to enhance the Hawaiian theme. Jute and sisal rugs along with bamboo bead curtains help achieve a tropical effect. Look for baskets, lampshades and mats that are made from grass cloth or sea grass.

4. Reflect nature by adding plants to your d cor. Large, leafy green plants add a sense of the tropics to any d cor.

5. Create a sense of calm with water. Indoor fountains are one way to invite a relaxing atmosphere into your home. Look for one that complements your decorating theme. If you have bamboo in your room, look for bamboo in the fountain.

6. Create a festive Hawaiian mood with lights. Hang strings of lights to establish a more relaxed mood.

7. Keep window treatments simple. Fabric panels in colors that highlight colors in a pillow or throw will give the room a sense of harmony. Bamboo shades are also a nice element in a Hawaiian-themed room.

8. Use other decorative items to enhance the ambiance of your room. Coconuts, pineapples, candles, starfish, seashells, Tiki masks and palm trees add a Hawaiian flair to any decor.
