Free Cake Decorating Ideas For Kids

Cakes can be plain affairs topped with only a bit of powdered sugar. Cakes also can be more elaborate creations in all shapes and sizes, crafted half from baking materials and half from imagination. Children of all ages often love cakes. A cake designed around a child's interests or hobbies can be the perfect end to any meal. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Cartoon Cake

Classic animated movies such as "Bambi" and "Sleeping Beauty" have been watched for decades, and animated television series such as "Phineas and Ferb" and "The Simpsons" continue to enthrall kids. Draw on "The Simpsons" for inspiration. Each episode ends with the characters sitting on a couch in the living room. Make a couch for Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie out of a standard cake. Place another piece of cake at the end of the first cake to form the sofa back; adhere it using icing. Craft the sides of the sofa from additional pieces of cake. Top with colored icing so it forms one large piece. Add details such as the fabric bottom with a swirl of icing around the edge. Make the cartoon characters using pieces of fondant. Make the bodies from yellow fondant. Give Marge a large piece of blue fondant for her blue hairdo. Dress Lisa in a red fondant dress with a white pearl necklace.

Present Cake

Make a birthday present cake. Bake three cake layers. The first layer should be roughly one third as big as the second. The next two layers should be roughly one third as big as the previous layer. Ice the first layer with bright red icing. Top with little circles of icing in a contrasting color such as blue to make polka dots. Ice the second layer with stripes in a different color such as green and yellow. Ice the third layer in yet another different color such as purple. Place the layers on top of each other to form a three-tiered cake. Top with a bow made from thin licorice strands.

Castle Cake

Turn a cake into a castle. Make a standard square layer cake. Top with another cake about one-fourth the size of the first cake. Ice both with pink or white icing. Use graham crackers to make doors and windows, pressing them against the sides of the cake. Make ramparts from ice cream cones. Press the cones into the cake so the tops form towers. Cut out flags from oak tag or cardboard. Tape a toothpick to the end of the flag. Tape the other end of the toothpick to the cones.
