Free Hawaiian Luau Party Ideas

A luau appeals to both adults and kids.

Bring a taste of Hawaii into your home or backyard with a luau on a hot, summer evening. Luaus are fun for both adults and kids, and you can even incorporate themed activities geared toward both age groups in one party. So, get the tiki torches going, prepare to hula and enjoy your luau. Does this Spark an idea?

Invitations

If you want guests to come to your party, you're going to have to convey the information. Leis are a themed way to give out your invitations. Just print your important party details, such as when, where and a contact number on 3-inch by 4-inch pieces of card stock. If you want, you could also just write the details with a pen. Cut them out, then punch a hole in the corner and use a piece of raffia to tie the details around a lei.

You could also create the trunk of a coconut tree using brown construction paper and use a metallic pen to write the party details. Use green construction paper to add leaves, then stick some small brown pompoms on for coconuts.

Food And Drinks

For some kid-friendly choices, consider serving pineapple-based foods like pineapple upside-down cake with pineapple juice. Lil' Duck Duck also suggests serving a rice and pineapple casserole along with a green salad. Adults may enjoy piña coladas (with or without alcohol), grilled pineapple, skewers with steaks, peppers, mushrooms and onions. If you're looking for something a little heavier, your guests may enjoy a spiral-cut ham baked in a pineapple glaze and served with yams on the side.

Games

The younger kids may enjoy a sand bucket toss using shovels, ping-pong balls and sand buckets. Line the buckets at one end and give each player a container with ping-pong balls. Players must use the shovel to toss balls into their buckets. The first player to get them all in the bucket wins. Older guests may enjoy a friendly hula dancing competition, though you may want to do this before everyone fills up on food. Pick two players to go head-to-head in a hula competition. The player to keep his hula hoop going the longest wins. You could also start this game with everyone playing, with the last one standing declared the winner.

Crafts

Kids may enjoy making these inverted grass skirts from The Party Animal, which will become hats. Staple the short ends of two pieces of green craft foam together to create a "tube" large enough for a child's head. Kids can then cut strips along the straight edge all the way around to look like grass, then turn it upside down to wear. If they want, they can add something like "Aloha" in craft foam letters, Adults may enjoy making these quick and easy sand-coated pillar candles from Dream Weddings on a Budget. Just roll a pillar candle in glue, then sprinkle enough sand on it to coat. They can use hot glue to add seashells to the outside of the candle as well.
