Fondant Cake Ideas For Girls

Fondant can be used to create a beautiful birthday cake.

Fondant has grown in popularity over the years, with many creative cake bakers taking cake decorating to the extreme by customizing nearly any cake idea imaginable. Fondant can put a whimsical or sophisticated spin on a girl's cake by being versatile in color, flavor and the ability to be sculpted into different shapes and characters. Does this Spark an idea?

Princess Castle

Many little girls dream of being a princess in a grand castle, and fondant can bring your child's dream come true. Frost and then apply a cover of fondant over a rectangular or square cake in the flavor of choice. To make towers, form cereal treats --- a treat made by melting marshmallows and butter and mixing in crispy rice cereal --- into cylinder shapes and cover them with a coating of fondant. Top the towers with fondant rolled into pointed roofs, then cut out door and window shapes from the leftover fondant to be applied to the castle and tower walls. Use fondant shaping tools to add minor detailing as desired.

Doll Cake

Dolls can make for whimsical and interesting focal points of a cake. Select a doll that will be tall enough to be pushed down into a two- or three-layer cake and still have its upper body be seen (from the waist up). Wrap the lower part of the doll in aluminum foil to protect it from getting messy. Bake a two- or three- layer round cake (number of layers will depend upon doll size or desired size of cake), then carefully trim the cakes into a skirt shape. Spoon out a hole from the top of the cake to the center and insert the doll. Cover the cake with icing and then fondant in your desired color, and form it into the skirt of the doll. Fondant can also be applied to the doll for a top if the doll's existing top has been removed.

Character Cake

Television, movie and book characters can all inspire a girl's fondant cake. Character cakes are versatile and can take on any shape or style imagined. They can be simple, such as a sheet cake with character sugar candies or toys placed on top, or complex. Cake tiers can be covered in fondant in colors corresponding to those found in the character's show, movie or book. A crafty cake decorator could give fondant sculpting a go, and try a completely edible replica of the child's favorite character to sit on top of the cake.

Favorite Things Cake

Many girls have a favorite pastime or hobby that can be the inspiration for a fondant cake. Cake tiers in any flavor and shape can be covered in your child's favorite colors; they can even be covered in a favorite pattern or print. Fondant accents such as flowers, lipstick tubes, small shoes or even favorite animals could hide the spots where two cakes meet, or can be used as a border around the base of the cake. A main sculpture can be made by molding and shaping cereal treats to resemble an animal or cartoon character, for instance. The sculpture can be covered in fondant and be the focal point of the cake, sitting on top to be enjoyed by your child on her special day.
