Fondant Decorating Ideas

Wedding cake with white fondant decoration

Fondant adds an extra touch in decorating cakes, cookies and cupcakes. Techniques vary in using fondant decorations. It bends, pours and otherwise adheres, presenting a more professional-appearing finished treat for birthdays, weddings and other celebrations. Purchase fondant in bakery stores or make your own from scratch. Imagine, create and enjoy the ways fondant turns ordinary baked goods into fun, decorated masterpieces. Does this Spark an idea?

Tinted Cutouts

Small heart cookie cutters work well for making fondant heart cutouts

Mix food coloring with rolled fondant to create your favorite colors. Rolled fondant is a somewhat firm-type of fondant rolled out, and then draped over cakes and sometimes cupcakes. Add the liquid food coloring a few drops at a time and knead the fondant, as you would bread dough. Once you achieve the desired color, use a rolling pin to flatten the fondant into a sheet, as you might sugar cookie dough. Push small cookie cutters into the fondant to create the shapes you like, such as a small star. Place the stars or other cutouts on iced cakes, cookies or cupcakes.

Airbrushing

Fondant serves as a canvas on a cake for those who use an airbrush. Cover your cake with a sheet of the rolled-out fondant. White fondant works best. First, create a sketched design from the top to the bottom of the cake with a small paintbrush. Second, fill in the color with the airbrush. Carry this process through until the last part is finished. This results in one of a kind painted fondant pictures for special occasion decorated cakes.

Minidecorations

Sculpt rolled fondant like clay. Make minidecorations to sit on top of a cake or cupcakes. For example, if you have a teen celebrating a birthday, make minifondant cell phones. Color your own rolled fondant or buy it precolored. Cut rectangular pieces in a lighter color. Press small, black shapes to represent buttons on the "phone." Make them stick with a bit of icing, if needed.

Pourable Fondant

Pourable fondant adds a glossy, professional shine to decorating cookies and cupcakes. As the name suggests, this liquid fondant pours and spreads. Pour the fondant in the center, spread over the sides with a small icing knife or spatula, and allow it to dry. For extra effect, scatter sprinkles or colored sugar across the top before it dries.
