Foods That Go Well With Cheesecake

Three different flavors of cheesecake.

Rich, creamy cheesecake makes a delicious dessert. It tastes great plain, but you can add a delectable flair by combining it with other foods and toppings. Try these mouthwatering suggestions the next time you're in the mood to prepare cheesecake. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Chocolate

You can never have too much chocolate with your cheesecake.

This decadent sweet is a perfect complement for cheesecake. In fact, as of April 2011, 37 of Food Network's best-of-the-best cheesecake recipes involved chocolate!

Combine melted semisweet chocolate with a touch of espresso to make a potently dark chocolate topping for your cheesecake. Or, you can mix melted chocolate right into the cake batter for creamy, chocolate-flavored cheesecake. Chocolate shavings add an elegant touch on top. You can also experiment with mixing whole chocolate chips into your batter or using crushed chocolate wafers for your crust.

Caramel

Pale yellow cheesecake topped with golden caramel is a delight to see and taste.

Rich, buttery-sweet, and ever-so-slightly-salty caramel is a heavenly cheesecake partner! All you need is homemade or store-bought caramel sauce or syrup. Pour thick caramel sauce over your cheesecake before baking to create a beautiful amber top layer. Or, drizzle thinner caramel syrup over your cheesecake just before serving. You can even mix caramel into your batter for a hint of that delicious indulgence right in the cheesecake itself.

Berries

Blueberries are an appealingly fresh option.

Berries and cheesecake are another winning pair. Strawberries are a classic topping choice. You can make use of convenient prepared strawberry topping or make your own. Or you might artfully arrange fresh strawberry slices on top of your cheesecake. Blueberries are a less expected but equally tasty choice, in either preserved or fresh form. You can also experiment with slightly tart raspberries or blackberries to bring out the full sweetness of your cheesecake.

Other Fruits

Try adding more exotic fruits like pineapple and coconut to your cheesecake.

Cherries are another traditional cheesecake partner. They are readily available in the form of maraschino cherries or thick preserves, or you can pit and preserve them yourself. Feel free to branch out; lemons make a delightfully tangy complement to light, airy cheesecakes, while sweeter fruits like kiwis and peaches hold their own with creamier, more buttery cheesecakes. Consider also less conventional fruits like mango, apples, and figs--don't limit yourself! You can even give the cheesecake itself a lovely flavor by adding ingredients like orange juice, shredded coconut or mashed bananas to the batter.

Nuts

Explore how you can combine nuts with other tasty ingredients.

Nuts go wonderfully with cheesecake, too. They can act as garnishes, be incorporated into crust or combined with other ingredients. Chocolate and nuts are always a winner. If you're making caramel cheesecake, add a bit of melted peanut butter to the caramel sauce to enhance the flavor. Mix caramel or corn syrup with walnuts, pecans, almonds or other nuts for a scrumptious, sticky-sweet topping. Or, you can combine nuts with berries and fruit flavors for a fresher crunch.
