Foods Grown In Hawaii

There is no place on earth like Hawaii. Beautiful beaches, active volcanoes, warm people and serenity are all part of its allure. But beyond sun, sand and surf, Hawaii is rich in fruits, vegetables and nuts. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Coffee

Hawaii is the only place in the United States where coffee is grown. On the hills of the Mauna Loa, coffee thrives. Kona coffee is enjoyed and requested not only in the United States, but also around the world.

Sugar Cane

Settlers brought sugar cane with them and soon found that Hawaii was the perfect spot to grow it. Hawaiians chew it raw or squeeze it from the cane.

Pineapples

The second-largest crop in Hawaii is pineapples. The Dole pineapple plant in Oahu is one of the largest purchasers of Hawaiian pineapples and owns the entire island of Lanai, where it also grows pineapples.

Rice

Hawaii's warm climate is good for growing rice, one of the state's main crops. Hawaii exports its rice all over the world.

Macadamia Nuts

Hawaii grows 90 percent of the world's macadamia nuts, though the macadamia tree is native to Australia.

Papayas

Hawaii is also a major supplier of papayas, especially to the U.S. mainland and Canada.
