Fun Sweet 16 Party Ideas

An assortment of candies and other desserts take center stage at a candy-themed Sweet 16 party.

The turning of sweet 16 is a milestone event in a teen's life, and, as such, is often celebrated by a major birthday party. Make yours one to remember by choosing a fun party theme. Whether you choose a traditional theme, like a luau, or something a little funky, like a Diamonds and Denim theme, remember that details will ensure that the night is unforgettable. Does this Spark an idea?

Sweet Treats

Create your own Candy Land with a candy-themed Sweet 16 party. Serve an assortment of candies as well as doughnuts, ice cream sundaes, cookies and cupcakes. One advantage to decorating with candy is the variety of colors it will add to the decor. Scatter ice cream sprinkles on tables instead of confetti. Use bouquets of lollipops as table centerpieces. Set up a chocolate fountain with fruits, marshmallows and cake squares. Adorn the tables with cardboard cutouts of Candy Land characters, and place squares of different colors in a winding trail through the room as a nod to the board game.

Movie Magic

Head out to the movies with this easy-to-accomplish party theme. Send invitations that mimic movie tickets. Instruct guests to dress as characters from their favorite movies, serve popcorn and movie candies, and decorate the space with movie posters available at movie rental stores or online. Show a double feature of the birthday boy's favorite movies. Don't forget the red carpet at the entrance. Ask several parents or other chaperones to serve as paparazzi taking pictures along the red carpet to create fun souvenirs for attendees.

Tropical Luau

Pineapple centerpieces and fun fruity drinks add color and authenticity to a luau theme.

Best during warmer months, a tropical luau has endless possibilities for Sweet 16 fun. If you want this kind of party during cooler months, consider holding it inside a community center or other indoor venue, preferably one with access to a swimming pool. Hand out leis as guests enter. Hire hula dancers to entertain and teach your guests some of the basic steps. Serve roasted pig and fruit kabobs, and no luau is complete without paper drink umbrellas in each cup. Decorate tables with whole tropical fruits; pineapples, mangoes and coconuts are popular choices.

Diamonds and Denim

This party theme highlights two things everyone can get: blue jeans and diamonds, either faux or real. It's a glamorous twist to dressing down. Girls should wear denim jeans, skirts, dresses or jackets with as much diamond costume jewelry as they can find. Guys can wear jeans with a diamond-studded chain, watch or belt buckle. Decorate the room with anything that sparkles and shines, such as a disco ball, and serve sparkling cider in champagne flutes. Strobe lights simulate the sparkle of diamonds and will help keep the energy of the party high.
