Beach Theme Activities

A beach theme can help create either a relaxing or exuberant party scene.

A beach theme party can incorporate the bright, vibrant colors of a tropical paradise or take on a nautical spin with soft, cool colors and images of the sea. A tropical party, for example, can include a Hawaiian luau with exotic flowers and island music. A nautical party, in turn, can include images of sailboats and sand castles. Beach parties can inspire a variety of sun, surf and sand party activities. Does this Spark an idea?

Sandcastle Building

Whether you're hosting a party at the beach or creating a beach-themed party at your house, sand castle building is an activity that both younger and older guests can enjoy. Divide the guests into two teams and designate a judge. If you're hosting your party at the beach, the teams can choose their preferred locations to build their creations. If you're hosting the event inland, buy two children's sand tables -- available at toy, home improvement and big box stores -- and direct the teams to build their sand castles in them. After a pre-set amount of time, the judge determines the winner.

Sand-Filled Bottles

Teach your guests create sand-filled bottle favors to take home as party mementos. Put a piece of wax paper on a cutting board and cover it in sand. Roll colored chalk across the sand until it changes color. Lift the wax paper and shake the sand to the center. Hold both ends of the paper and bring them together as a sort of funnel to pour the colored sand into a bottle. Use the eraser end of a pencil to make a few dips in the sand. Repeat the steps with several colors to create layers in the bottle.

Buried Treasure

Fill a kiddie swimming pool with sand and bury small treasures such as balls, play jewelry and key chains in the sand. Provide the party guests with small shovels and sand sifters to help them find the buried treasures. Guests can take the treasures home as a party favor.

Flip-Flop Crafts

Provide guests with materials to make decorated flip-flop party favors. Buy an assortment of flip-flops at a dollar store, choosing sizes and styles according to your guest list. Set out a craft table with strips of fabric, ribbon, jewels, glitter and glue, as well as an assortment of embellishments that will amuse boys and men, then invite your guests to create their own designer flip-flops.
