Use tropical leis to decorate your Hawaiian-themed party.
Bring the beach to you with a tropical Hawaiian luau-themed party. Aside from the tropical decorations and food, be sure to plan a variety of luau games to play. Games keep your guests involved in the party. Award the winners of each game with tropical-themed prizes such as leis, tropical hats and coconuts. Does this Spark an idea?
Pass the Lei
Have all guests stand or sit in a circle and give one player a flower lei necklace. Play tropical music and have the guests pass around the lei. Each guest must put the lei around her neck, take it off and pass it to the next person. When the music stops, the player holding the lei is out of the game. Keep playing until only one player remains. That player is the winner of the game.
Tourist Relay Race
Fill two beach bags each with a grass skirt, sunglasses, lei necklace, straw hat and tropical shirt. Divide players into two even teams and have each team line up at the starting line. Place two beach chairs about 20 feet away from the starting line. Put a cooler with small, kid-size fruit drinks in between the chairs. On "go," the first player in each team has to put on everything in the beach bag, run and sit down in the beach chair, drink a kid-size drink from the cooler and run back to the starting line. He takes off the beach attire and the next player in each line does the same. The team who has all their players complete this first wins the game.
Island Hopping
Cut out "islands" from brown construction paper or cardboard. Place the "islands" all around the backyard and space them apart. For kids, space the island two to three feet apart and about four to five feet apart for adults. This makes it harder for players to hop from island to island. On "go," each player tries to hop from "island" to "island" without falling off in the "water." If a player falls off in the "water," he is out of the game. The last player standing wins the game.
Play this game as a relay by making two identical courses and let teams compete against each other. When making a relay race, space the "islands" closer together so the players do not fall off as easy. Let one player at a time go across the "islands" and the team who gets all players across the "islands" first wins the game.
