Fun Kids' Birthday Cakes

Are you planning a birthday party and looking for some seriously fun cake ideas? You can bake an amazing cake and decorate it in an unconventional way to surprise friends and family with a treat they won't soon forget. Even a beginner can create an amazing cake, using techniques and secrets from the pro's. Does this Spark an idea?

Bucket O Popcorn Cake

If you're planning a film festival sleep over or a carnival birthday party, consider baking a popcorn birthday cake. Begin with three round cake layers. Stack them up, using butter cream frosting or custard filling in between each layer. Use wooden dowels to stabilize the cake, if you'll need to transport it. Hold the doweling up to the side of the cake and make a pencil line 1/8 inch below the cake level. Cut three pieces of doweling, at that length and press them into the cake, at least an inch from the edge.

Frost the entire cake with white frosting, making the outer edges extremely smooth, like a paper popcorn bucket. Use icing spray color to create red stripes on the side of the cake. You can make a stencil or purchase one. Icing spray color dries almost instantly. For an authentic look, your red and white stripes should all be about an inch thick.

Once the outside is striped, Add a layer of yellow frosting to the top of the cake and press real buttered popcorn into the frosting. If you want a mountain of popcorn on top of the cake, use a popcorn ball recipe to create one large popcorn ball, then place it on top before it's fully dry, so that you can shape it the way you want.

Digging for Worms Cake

You can make a dirt cake that makes children giggle, using a surprising technique that will impress friends and family. Bake two six inch and one eight iinch round layer cake. Place one of the six inch layers inside of a terra cotta pot with an eight inch diameter. Spread a1/2" - 1" layer of pudding or custard on top of the six inch layer, then add the other six inch layer, and a final layer of pudding. Place the eight inch layer on top, it should fill out the upper rim of the cake. Frost with a dark brown frosting and cover with crushed Oreos.

Decorate with a little gardening shovel, gummy worms and jelly beans that look like rocks. You can also place the foliage from a pineapple on top of the Oreos. Imagine the children's surprise when they see you taking the green stalks off the top and offering them a bite!

This cake works well for a child's gardening birthday party, or a bug-themed party.

Hamburger Cake

A hamburger cake can be a lot of fun for a backyard barbecue party. Bake three 8" or 9" round layering cakes. Stack the first two together with a layer of custard or cream filling in between them.

Freeze the third layer, according to Kathy from Homemadebirthdays.com, a frozen cake makes no crumbs and is less likely to crumble, break or rip. Once it's solid, use a bread knife to trim the corner rim off so that it's shaped like a dome. Apply a layer of custard of frosting in between the second layer and the third, then frost the entire cake with butter cream frosting.

Use a golden brown shade of spray food coloring to paint the bun. Measure the height of the finished cake and use a piece of string to score halfway down, around the cake, to ensure that the "filling" is centered well. Create a rippling green ring of lettuce using a piping bag and a wide flat tip. A narrow flat tip works well for inion and tomatoes. A thick round tip is used for the hamburger patty.

On top of the cake, use a very small round tip with a cream or white frosting to create little sesame seeds.
