Free Activities In Maui Hawaii

Maui sunsets are always free to take in.

On the island of Maui, some of the best things to do are free. From leisurely walks and picnics on the beach to incredible day adventures, there is plenty visitors can enjoy while giving their vacation budgets a break. There are also some great activities that are not quite free, but cost $10 or less, including Haleakala National Park, snorkeling equipment rentals, The Keiki Zoo and many museums and places rich in Hawaiian history.

Tedeschi Vineyard

The Tedeschi Vineyard, located in southern Maui, is free and open to the public. Free tours of the vineyard are offered at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. each day. Though tasting or taking home the wine will cost money, visitors can still enjoy Maui's only working vineyard and winery and learn about Maui's wine history.

Whaling Center of the Pacific

The Whaling Center of the Pacific is a free museum open daily from 9:30 a.m. until 10 p.m. The center gives visitors a glimpse into Lahaina's whaling industry, including films about whales and whaling and other artifacts. Free tours given by certified marine biologists are also available; call to arrange one.

Iao Valley State Park

Iao Valley State Park has one of the easiest, most scenic hikes in Maui, and admission into the park is free. Get some exercise and explore the outdoors with a trip to Iao Valley. The paved walkway will take you all the way to the Iao Needle, a large natural rock formation. Get adventurous and hike to the pools nearby for quick dip.

Road to Hana

Some of the best free things in Maui are on the road to Hana, including numerous scenic lookouts and hidden waterfalls for photographing and swimming. Look for the rainbow eucalyptus trees, found in only a few places in the world. The gas will cost you some money, but the rest is completely free, unless you want to purchase a smoothie from one of the many stands along the way.

Whale Watching

Every year from mid-December through mid-April, humpback whales migrate to the warm Hawaiian waters to mate and give birth to calves. You can observe these majestic creatures just a few hundred feet from shore. Boat tours are offered for an up-close view, but if you want to see the whales for free, good viewing points are the cliffs at Honolua Bay in northwestern Maui or the scenic lookout on the Honoapilani Highway that runs along Maui's north and west shoreline.

Shapers Surf Museum

Shapers Surf Museum is free and open daily from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Visitors can see the history of surfing on Maui, including early surfboards, instruments used to make surfboards and a history of the evolution of the surfboard. More than 300 surfing items are on display.
