Fun Baby Shower Foods

Fun and simple foods help to create a relaxed atmosphere for a baby shower.

Although baby showers sometimes feature full entrees, less formal foods are ideal for creating a more relaxed and casual atmosphere. Simple foods allow the guests to relax, have fun and focus on the mommy-to-be. Another benefit of fun baby shower foods is that they are generally more simple and less expensive to make than planning more complicated meals. Does this Spark an idea?

Finger Foods

Finger foods are fun and simple for baby showers. Consider crackers with sausage and cheese, lil smokies and hot wings. These foods can generally be bought ready made but can also be prepared cheaper at home. Fruit and veggie trays are also simple for baby showers. Baby shrimp served with cocktail sauce offer another option.

Fruit Carriage Bowl

Transform a hollowed-out watermelon into a fruit salad bowl. Give it a baby shower theme look by making the watermelon resemble a baby carriage. Cut about one-fourth off an oval-shaped watermelon to create a bowl. Attach orange or grapefruit to the bottom with toothpicks to create the appearance of wheels. Trim the leftover rind into a rectangular shape and attach with toothpicks at the top to resemble a carriage handle.

Chocolate Fountain

A chocolate fountain is not only functional but can also serve as the centerpiece. Fruits such as strawberries, cherries, apples slices and bananas make excellent chocolate dippers. Pretzels, wafers and other types of cookies are popular choices for chocolate dippers as well.

Poo in the Potty

This humorous idea requires the use of a new potty chair that later can be given to the expecting mother. Prepare a light colored gelatin, such as pineapple or lemon flavor, and put it in the potty chair. When the gelatin is semi-hard, a chocolate bar is dropped in the potty chair and then the gelatin is allowed to finish setting to create the visual effect of poo in the potty!

Chips and Dip

Serve dips such as salsa, guacamole and various cheese flavors with different chip varieties. This is one of the simplest types of food for these events. To maintain the baby shower theme, use light colored dips such as ranch or French onion and add food coloring to match the color scheme.

Tortilla Pinwheels

Making this healthy baby shower snack requires 8 ounces of sour cream, 8 ounces of creams cheese, 4 ounces of drained green chillies, 4 ounces of drained sliced black olives, 1 cup of grated cheddar cheese and one-half cup of diced green onions to be mixed together in a bowl and then spread on five tortillas. Tightly roll the tortillas with the mixture in plastic wrap and refrigerate for several hours. Once the rolls are cool, removed and slice them into pinwheels one-half to three-quarter inches thick and served on a platter. Serve with salsa dip.

Customized Rice Krispie Treats

Use these as baby shower favor treats. To make these, put a lollipop stick inside a Rice Krispie treat. Melt white chocolate in a double boiler and color it with food coloring, usually pink, blue, yellow or green. Use a spatula to coat the pre-made Rice Krispie treat with the colored white chocolate and place it on wax paper. Place a baby themed edible cake decoration such as a rattle or rubber ducky on the treat before it dries.

Baby Shower Punch

Mix one package of unsweetened drink mix in the desired color, one cup of granulated sugar, one two-liter bottle of lemon lime soda and 64 ounces of white cranberry juice. When the punch is ready to be served, add large dollops of vanilla ice cream. The color lightens as the ice cream melts. For example, if blue drink mix is used the color will be more of a baby blue and the ice cream floats on top, resembling white clouds. Clean rubber duckies can be added to the punch bowl to give it even more of a baby shower theme.
