Themes for fifth grade dances should be youthful and casual.
Fifth grade, on the eve of attending middle school, is often when children are making their transition to the world of adolescence. A part of that experience is often school dances. Fifth grade marks the period when students begin attending co-ed school parties that involve socializing. It is important that young students are not only comfortable, but also excited about this important event, and choosing the right kind of dance can often make the difference.
First Dance
Since fifth grade is often the time of first dances, you might consider doing a first dance theme. These events can be nerve wracking for many students, as they have never danced with the opposite sex and are unsure of act. If your school is smaller, you may want to do a themed type of dance where students come in and learn a group dance at the beginning of the event. It can be country line dancing, ballroom dancing or even a simple swing.
Student Chosen Theme
Let your fifth graders choose the theme. It can often be difficult to decide what is important to 12-year-olds and you want the students to be comfortable. You also do not want to choose a theme that is too grown-up or too childish. Choose three themes: a fifties sock hop, a costume party or an Old West theme and let the students vote!
Activity Theme
A theme that involves activities is a good idea for fifth graders, in order to avoid a dance floor with no movement. For example, if you do a Hawaiian or Luau theme, you can have a luau-dancing contest. Hand out leis and grass skirts to lighten the mood. A Candyland theme is also fun. Set up a table of various candies, blindfold students and have them guess what they are eating. You can also have a Candyland game board on the floor where students can follow the game path to the D.J. in order to request songs.
Rock Band
The most important aspect of a fifth grade school dance is that students interact socially. A "rock band" theme can be fun and get students talking. Break up some of the students in groups of three or four and have them choose a song to sing on karaoke. Other students can serve as judges. Decorate the space like a popular singing show. For the first hour, have a contest until everyone is comfortable and then turn to dancing.
