Feathers can turn an old skirt into a posh new accessory.
Feather skirts offer a cool, modern alternative to fringe. They offer iridescent shine and movement to your skirt without looking dated or tacky. Feathers also come in a wide variety of colors and patterns, allowing you to go earthy with neutral feathers or totally glam with neon colors. One of the best things about feathered skirts is that you can make them at home. If you have a dated or faded skirt that still fits like a glove, recycle it into a new, go-to piece. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Spread your skirt out on a clean, flat surface. Skirts with structure reaching no lower than your knees work best for this project. Polyester blends, thick knits and denim are also easy to manipulate.
2. Slide a piece of scrap cardboard into the skirt. This prevents you from accidentally gluing the sides of your skirt together.
3. Unroll a length of feather costume trim along the front bottom hem of your skirt. Snip to length and run a bead of liquid stitch along the underside of the trim. Press down gently and pin the trim into place. The pins keep the feathers in place until the liquid stitch dries.
4. Add a second row of feathers about 4 inches above the first. The feathers in the second row should overlap the feathers in the first row by about 1 1/2 inches.
5. Continue adding rows of feathers to the front of the skirt, pinning as you go. When finished, flip the skirt over and add rows of feathers to the back. Overlap the ends of the rows in the back of the skirt with those in the front. That way, you have no gaps in the trim.
6. Let the liquid stitch dry overnight. Remove all of the pins and pair your posh new skirt with stylish tights and a cute sweater or denim jacket.
