Birthday Cake Decorating Instructions

Basic techniques can be used to create a birthday cake.

The birthday cake is a fixture at a birthday party that is appreciated by all who attend. It should be both delicious and festive to celebrate the occasion. If you are just starting out in cake decorating, then you may need a good starting point to create a general birthday cake. With a few tips, you can create a birthday cake just like the bakeries, but without the high cost. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Place a frosted square cake on a cake decorating table. Make sure the cake is centered on the turntable to make decorating easier.

2. Fill three pastry bags with prepared buttercream. Dye buttercream a different color from the base frosting of the cake by adding a few drops of gel coloring and mixing until the color is blended through.

3. Use the pastry bag with the small round tip to write a birthday message on the top of the cake. Keep the message centered and even by first outlining the message with a toothpick in the icing on top of the cake. Use the pastry bag to trace over the outlined message.

4. Place small dots using the same pastry bag at each corner edge of the cake. Place a second layer of dots on the edge of the cake in between the first set of dots. These will be used as markers for swags on the cake.

5. Use the pastry bag with the rose tip or ruffle tip to create swags. Point the large opening of the pastry tip downward as you start at one dot, and slowly squeeze the buttercream from the pastry bag in an upside down arch toward the right. Meet the arch up at the second dot. Repeat the swag motion around the rest of the cake until all of the dots have swags.

6. Use the pastry bag with the star tip to create a border on the top and bottom of the cake. Start at the top right corner of the square cake. Lightly press the buttercream from the pastry bag with the star tip facing directly down on the cake's surface. Release the pressure off the pastry bag and lift up to leave a star impression. Repeat this pattern around the top edge of the cake and then on the bottom edge of the cake.

7. Finish the cake with sprinkles on top around the message, as well as on the bottom border of the cake. Place the cake in a cake dome or box to keep fresh until serving.
