Beach
To create a beachy scene, buy some bags of play sand, fill a sandbox with it and place it next to a wading pool or a swimming pool. Scatter beach toys and other outdor playthings, such as beach balls, flying discs and hula hoops, around the area. Spread towels on the sand to make it look even more like the beach and put up signs that say "Beach This Way," with an arrow pointing toward the sand.
Music
Music goes hand-in-hand with the surfing scene. The classic choices are the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean, although any beach-themed music or Hawaiian-style music will work well for the party. Alternatively, simply play your child's favorite music that's suitable for the guest list.
Food
Serve traditional summer and beach picnic food to keep in line with the theme. Suitable options include fruit kebabs and grilled hamburgers and hot dogs. Serve plenty of water and other drinks to keep the guests hydrated while they run around in the sun. If you're planning a sit-down meal, use surf- or beach-themed plates and napkins.
Wipeout Game
Create a large foam surfboard shape or use an old surfboard, if you have one or can borrow one. Set it in your back yard and have one swimsuit-clad child stand on it. The other kids get to throw buckets of water -- they can also use the garden hose -- and inflatable beach balls at her until she falls off. Another child takes her place until everyone has had a turn. To make the game a bit competitive, award a small prize to the child who takes the longest to "wipeout."
