Christmas Decoration Projects With Wood Cutting

Wooden Christmas ornaments adorn both indoor and outdoor trees.

Christmas is a time of year that can inspire creativity as whimsical scenes commemorating the season begin to appear everywhere. Christmas decoration projects are only limited by your imagination and can range from simple indoor designs to large, outdoor landscapes. Wood makes a good material for use in Christmas decorations--from ornaments to manger scenes. Creating these projects often involves cutting the wood, so be sure to have appropriate tools on hand before starting. Does this Spark an idea?

Themed Tree

Christmas trees are often designed with a certain theme in mind. These themed trees may be decorated with a similar type of ornament. A tree filled with painted wooden cutouts makes a good Christmas decorating project. Choose the theme of your wooden ornaments. Ideas include sports, music, winter and animals. Use a saw to cut out different wooden shapes related to your chosen theme. Paint the wooden decorations and hang from your tree. Consider making different bunches of themed wooden ornaments for trees in different rooms of your house.

Manger

A manger scene is a classic Christmas decoration that can be displayed outdoors on your lawn or indoors. Wooden manger displays can be created in sizes from small, tabletop displays to life-size outdoor scenes. For a small display, use plywood, Popsicle sticks or wood scraps to form the manger. If you're making an outdoor display, cedar makes a good choice and, over time, creates a weathered look. One consideration for outdoor displays is to make the manger with cut wooden slats. This allows for greater visibility of the baby Jesus.

Christmas Village

Build a Christmas village from wood to display in your yard. Each building can be formed from plywood, cut to the appropriate size and shape. You can paint the wood buildings to be anything from Santa's workshop to a quaint church. Set up your village and embellish with Christmas lights for added visibility in the dark. Lighted figures also add a bit of life to the village.

Christmas Card Wall Display

Christmas cards are exchanged between friends and family each holiday season. Many times, the cards are elaborately decorated. A Christmas card tree provides a way to display the cards. Attach cut, wooden dowels of different lengths to a single ribbon, which serves as the trunk. The cards are attached to the dowels and the tree can be hung on the wall.
