Autumn Preschool Art Activities
It is important to teach preschool children about the autumn season, as it is closely associated with a variety of holidays and events. Making art projects with an autumn theme will not only educate kids about the season, but encourage them to be creative as well. Even on a small budget, there are several autumn art projects you can do with your preschoolers.
Decorated Pumpkins
Pumpkins are associated with autumn, and they're also one of the most recognizable symbols of the season to preschoolers. Prepare for this activity by cutting out pumpkin shapes from orange construction paper--make the shapes large, so the children will have a big enough surface to decorate. Hand out a pumpkin shape to each child, along with materials they can use to decorate them, such as large googly eyes, yarn, finger paint, markers or crayons. After their pumpkins are complete, you can hang them on the wall to make a pumpkin mural.
Paper Wreaths
To make pumpkin wreaths, you will need dinner-size, white paper plates (one for each child), scissors, construction paper, glue, crayons or finger paint. To prepare, cut a circle from the center of each paper plate by lightly folding it in half and cutting out a semi-circle--when unfolded, the center will be gone from the plate. Take fall-colored pieces of construction paper, in hues such as brown, orange, gold and deep purple, and cut out simple leaf shapes. You should cut out enough leaves so each child gets at least 10 of them. Give each child a paper plate and leaves. Instruct them to glue on the leaves in any way they'd like, and then decorate the wreath with crayons or paint.
Autumn Place Mats
For this activity, you need access to a lamination machine. You also need large, white pieces of paper, crayons, markers or finger paint. Give all the children a piece of paper and ask them to draw things that remind them of autumn, such as leaves or their favorite sweater. After the drawings are done, help each child write her name on them. Laminate the pictures and cut off the excess edges, then give each child the finished place mats. They can then use them for eating dinner or making crafts.
