About Caribbean Decor
Trying to recapture that peaceful, balmy Caribbean breeze, the sounds of the waves lapping the beach and the sweet smell of plumeria in the air? It is easier than you think to transform a room with a little Caribbean decor. Take your cues from nature and you will be in a veritable tropical heaven by nightfall. Does this Spark an idea?
Walls
When choosing your wall colors, think beach. What colors come to mind? The pale pink of a Bermudan beach, the bright green of a palm leaf or the turquoise blue of the Caribbean waters? Pick one that holds significance for you. Keep it a soft, calm and soothing color if tranquility is the effect you are trying to achieve. Conversely, if you want the colorful tropical Caribbean rainforest, look to the birds and go for more vibrant colors like orange, yellow, green and bright blue.
Flowers and plants
What evokes thoughts of the tropics more than tropical flowers such as hibiscus, bougainvillea, orchids, passion flowers and plumeria? Bring these stunning natives into your room's curtains, bedspreads, art work and rugs. Utilize candles with these same scents to expand on the theme. Bring in silk flowers and palm leaves to bring your room to life.
Textures
The Caribbean is full of dramatic textures you will want to include in your decor. Bamboo can be used in flooring, wallpaper, window blinds, furniture, mirrors, curtain rods, candle holders and many other products. Dark rainforest woods such as teak and mahogany are also appropriate textures. Put an ethnic clay pot in an unused corner and fill it with tall green grasses. Utilize woven baskets, place mats and shells to deepen the textures of the room.
Seaworthy
Tie your theme together with reminders of the sea such as a mirror framed in pale pink shells, or photographs from your beach vacations. Make sure that dash of blue or sea green is somewhere in sight to bring the ocean waters closer to your home. If you are using this theme in a child's room an old fishing net, hung like a hammock in a corner, makes a great storage spot for stuffed animals.
Lighting
Make sure your room reflects the mesmerizing Caribbean sun. If you have ample windows, use bamboo shades covered by soft, wispy, sheer fabrics that can blow in the breeze. If your room lacks sunshine, brighten the room with light fixtures and lamps to recreate that sunny warmth of the beach.
