Games To Play With Children Indoors

Playing games with kids keeps them entertained while indoors.

You probably want your children to play outdoors as much as they can, but that isn't always possible. Bad weather, such as rain and snow, keep kids indoors, where they can become bored and restless. If your children are stuck inside, consider playing a few games with them. These games will help them forget all about the rainy day until it's time to play outside again.

Bed Making Fun

Most children won't necessarily see bed making as a fun activity, but you can turn it into a game by helping them make a bed that a quarter can bounce off of. If you have multiple beds and children, turn it into a competition to see who can make the neatest bed first. Help your children tuck the sheet neatly under the mattress, then pull the top sheet and blanket evenly to the top of the bed. Smooth out the wrinkles that appear. When everything is tucked in properly, give a quarter to each child to bounce on the middle of the bed. If it bounces, the bed was made correctly.

Pizza Box Soccer

If the weather is bad outside, you probably don't feel like cooking or going out to eat. Consider ordering a pizza for dinner. After your family finishes eating, turn the pizza box into a miniature soccer field. Clean out the box thoroughly, then glue a sheet of green poster board to the bottom of the box, representing the field. Draw a line in the middle of the board, then two "goal" areas on opposite ends. Place a cotton ball or ping-pong ball into the box, and give each player a straw. Players compete by blowing the ball across the field in an attempt to reach the goal on the other side.

Touching and Smelling Activities

These games can be done with objects that you already have at home. For this "touching" game, fill up a box or bag with small items that children are likely to recognize by touch. Include items like favorite toys, a toothbrush or the television remote control. Blindfold each child, then have them select an object and try to tell you what it is. If they get it right, they earn one point. The person with the most points when the objects run out is the winner. This game can also be done with scented items, such as candles or spices. Hold out the item, and let the child smell it. Guessing correctly earns them one point.

Word Making Game

This game has the benefit of being educational, as well as fun. Write each letter of the alphabet on a piece of paper, then put all of the pieces into a bag. If you are playing with older kids, also include double letter pairs, such as "St" or "Cr." Hand every player a pen and notepad. Draw a letter out of the bag, and announce it to the group. Set a timer for 60 seconds. In that time, the players must write down as many words that start with that letter as they can. The player with the most words at the end of the round wins.
