Hawaii
Hawaii is known for its tropical climate and flowers. Flowers are sacred to Hawaiians and are used in cultural god and goddess stories, for medicinal purposes and in the process of lei making. Hawaii has an official state flower and each island has an official island flower. Does this Spark an idea?
Hawaiian Hibiscus
Yellow hibiscus
Hawaiian hibiscus or yellow hibiscus is the state flower of Hawaii. Hibiscus is a popular ornamental flower in Hawaii and grows in a shrub. It blooms in spring to early summer but occasional blooms can be found year round. The flowers are large--four to six inches in diameter--and the flower is a bright yellow color with a maroon center. The flowers are found on all of the Hawaiian islands except Ni'ihau and Kaho'olawe.
Ilima
Red ilima flower
Also known as the island flower of Oahu, the Ilima is a common Hawaiian flower. Ilima flowers generally grow in the upland section of the Hawaiian islands. The flowers measure about an inch in diameter. Ilima's are popular for lei making in Hawaii and represent good health. Ilima flowers were used as a cure for minor illnesess by early Hawaiians, so these flowers are culturally important to native Hawaiians.
Ohia/Lehua flowers
Ohia or lehua flowers (they are commonly referred to by both names) are the official flower of the Big Island of Hawaii. The ohia flower is the blossom of the ohia tree and can be orange, white or yellow in color. The blooms are normally one to three inches in size.
Plumeria
Yellow plumeria
Plumeria is the most common flower found in Hawaii. The flower is also important to Hawaiian culture. The plumeria is the most common flower used in Hawaiian leis, shirts and jewelry. The plumeria flower occurs in multiple colors: white with a yellow center, pink with a yellow center, yellow with white around the edges, purple with white around the edges or a bright pink. Plumeria requires little care and is found in most areas of the Hawaiian Islands.
