Children'S Birthday Cakes With Western Themes

Make a cake to resemble her favorite four-legged companion.

Novice and professional cake decorators can make a Western-themed birthday cake for a children's party. Use the guest of honor's interests as a guide to the cake design; does he enjoy pretend play with cowboy hats and boots, or does he spend his spare time riding horses? Make the Western-themed cake from a rectangular cake slab or a multi-level circular cake and use buttercream icing and fondant to decorate the cakes. Add candies for additional color. Does this Spark an idea?

Cowboy Boot

Make a 3D cowboy boot cake by cutting a two-layer rectangular cake into the shape of the boot. Cover the cake with brown buttercream icing or fondant. Add decoration to the boots with fondant cutouts or different icing colors. Alternatively, prepare a two-layer slab cake, spread a layer of icing on the cake in a color to match the party's color scheme. Prepare a batch of sugar cookies and cut them into cowboy boot shapes with cookie cutters. Bake the cookies, allow them to cool and then decorate them with royal icing.

Cowboy Hat

Turn a slab cake into a cowboy hat by tracing the shape of the hat onto the cake with a dull knife, cutting out the tracing and spreading a layer of brown icing on the cake. For an easy party treat, make a batch of cupcakes instead and place them on a cake tray to form the cowboy hat shape. Spread a thick layer of whipped icing on the cake and outline the hat with white icing. For an ambitious cake decorator, make a 3D cowboy hat cake with two oval-shaped cakes. Spread a layer of icing on one of the oval cakes and place the other on top. Roll out a large sheet of brown fondant to cover the cakes and have approximately four to five inches of excess on each side. Place the fondant sheet on the cakes, smooth out the fondant and turn up the excess at the bottom to make the hat's brim.

Horse

Make a horse-shaped birthday cake for a child's Western-themed party. Fill a horse-shaped cake pan with a favorite cake batter, bake the cake and allow it to cool. Decorate the cake with brown buttercream icing and a contrasting color for the horse's mane. For a pretty Western-themed party, make a 3D horse head shape, cover the cake in pink buttercream icing and use white and dark pink icing to make the horse's mane. Make the horse's eye and mouth and then surround the cake with silk or edible sugar paste flowers.

Two-Tier Ranch Cake

Turn a birthday cake into a multi-tier ranch cake. Prepare two different size round cakes, stack the cakes and spread a layer of buttercream icing over the entire cake, or cover the cakes in smooth sheets of fondant. Use a pastry bag, a thick wavy icing tip and brown icing to make fence posts all the way around the bottom cake. Make the cross posts using the same icing. Add grass to the cake with a star icing tip and clouds to the top cake from white fondant cutouts. Place a horse cake topper on the top of the cake.
