Hawaiian Birthday Cake Ideas

Hawaiian luau-themed birthday parties are popular, especially during the summer. You can throw the party outside and decorate with tiki torches, leis and grass skirts. Whether the party is for an adult or a child, make a cake that will coordinate with the birthday party's Hawaiian theme. Does this Spark an idea?

Surfboard Cake

Hawaii is a surfer's paradise. Create a surfboard cake to celebrate Hawaii's beaches and the surfers who love them. Bake round cakes, stack them and cover with white frosting. Sprinkle graham cracker crumbs over a portion of the top of the cake to create the beach. Consider placing plastic palm trees along your beach. Use blue frosting to create the ocean on the remainder of the top of the cake. Purchase miniature plastic toy surfboards online or at a party store and wash them thoroughly. Press the surfboards into the sides of the cake to complete the look.

Hula Girl Cake

You may have seen princess or Barbie doll cakes made with a doll and a large dome-shaped cake. Use a plastic doll to make a cake that looks like a hula girl. Bake the cake in a large oven-safe mixing bowl; this dome shape will serve as the hula girl's skirt. Grease the bowl thoroughly so that the cake comes out easily. When the cake has cooled, remove the doll's clothing and insert it into the middle of the dome-shaped cake up to its hips. Load tan or green frosting into a piping bag and pipe the frosting onto the cake in long vertical strokes so that it looks like a grass skirt. Use frosting to create a bikini top on the torso of the doll.

Lei Cake

Leis are commonly used in Hawaiian luaus, so consider making a cake that resembles a lei. A lei is a necklace made from brightly-colored flowers. Bake a rectangular sheet cake and frost it with a color that coordinates with the other colors you are using. Create the lei on top with flower-shaped cookies. Purchase the cookies or make flower-shaped sugar cookies and frost them with bright colors.

Pineapple Upside Down Cake

A classic cake that fits a Hawaiian party theme is a pineapple upside down cake. Make this cake by placing pineapple and a rum or caramel sauce in the base of a cake pan, topped by cake batter. When you turn the cake out of the pan, the caramelized pineapples will be on top. Place maraschino cherries in the centers of the pineapple slices to finish the cake.
