16th Birthday Ideas

Turning 16 is a special time to celebrate.

A teenager's sweet 16 is a pretty big deal. Celebrations range from expensive, extravagant parties to simple gatherings at home. Ask your teenager if a 16th birthday party sounds like fun. Teenagers can be rather finicky about such things, and you do not want to do anything to hurt their feelings or embarrass them. If they are interested, there are numerous ways to create memories and celebrate this joyous occasion. Does this Spark an idea?

Sweet Theme

Accentuate the tradition of calling this birthday "sweet 16" by arranging a party with a bunch of tasty, sweet treats--such as chocolate, ice cream, candies, cake and more. Include dancing, volleyball, swimming and other fun activities to keep the teenagers moving and exercising despite eating all the sweets.

Slumber Party

Many teenage girls would love to invite their girlfriends over for a slumber party. Have a party during the day or early afternoon with boys and girls, and then have the girls stay overnight. Socializing and just being together with girls doing girl things is important for teens.

Surprise Party

Surprise parties can be a lot of fun, but make sure you know your son or daughter well enough and are confident that they will not mind. Just involve the family, or invite school friends. Pull your son or daughter's best friend aside and ask for help. They would probably be thrilled to pull a fast one on their friend.

Spa Day

Girls who turn 16 want to be thought of more as an adult, so take her and some of her friends to a spa for a day of special treatment. They can get manicures, pedicures, make up and new hair styles. For added flair, arrange to have them picked up by a limousine and taken to a nice restaurant for dinner to end a fun, memorable day.

Pool Party

Many teenagers like to hang out at the pool, so arrange a pool party and grill some food, or provide a simple, catered meal or pot luck dinner.

Boys Day

Teenage boys may enjoy inviting a few guy friends to enjoy a fun game of paintball, go cart racing, baseball, basketball or other sports and popular "guy" activities.

Themed Party

Create a party centered on a particular theme that your son or daughter loves. Make sure the invitations play upon this theme, and ask guests to dress accordingly. Fun theme ideas include a Hawaiian luau, sock hop, popular movie, famous book and others.

DJ Party

Rent a party room at a hotel or a community center, and hire a DJ. Decorations can be bought at dollar or other discount stores. Have someone walk around to video tape special messages from party goers to the birthday boy or girl, and take plenty of pictures to remember the special night. Karaoke always adds fun to any party.

Gift Ideas

Gifts for a 16th birthday should be thoughtful, meaningful and represent where a 16-year-old is in life--still young, but approaching adulthood. Gifts ideas include special jewelry, a basket of goodies, gift certificate for clothing, flowers, money, a gas card, gym membership and more.
