Enhance Joseph's story for children by completing several activities.
The book of Genesis is filled with many captivating stories, including the story of Joseph. Many things---good and bad---occurred in Joseph's life at the hands of his family, the Pharaoh and God. The story includes many valuable life lessons that could be applied in real life. Use creative activities to assist children with the comprehension of Joseph's story.
Coloring Activity
For younger students, a coloring activity is a good way to reinforce the lessons learned from Joseph's dreams. Calvary Baptist Church provides several printable coloring sheets. The sheets contain various illustrations from Joseph's story, such as Joseph interpreting the chief cupbearer's dream and Joseph revealing himself to his brothers. Students will be able to color the illustration, as well as read the scripture included on the page (See Resources for links).
True or False Activity
The true or false activity is a spoken activity led by the teacher. The activity tests the students' comprehension of the story, as well as reinforcing lessons found from the text. After reading the story of Joseph from the book of Genesis, the teacher will read off several statements concerning the story. For example, the teacher can state that the Pharaoh recognized God working though Joseph's dreams (which is true). After every statement, the students will declare if it's true or not, and the teacher will provide the correct answer.
Unscramble Activity
The site eBible Teacher provides an activity that involves unscrambling words. The words are all keywords that establish the theme of Joseph's story, including "dreams," "cows," "chief cook" and "jail." The students must unscramble every word and then place the word in its corresponding sentence. For example, in the sentence, "The king sent for Joseph because he wanted to know what his ____ meant," the student will insert the word "dream."
Question and Answer Activity
A Question and Answer activity is best for older children. The activity tests the children's interpretation of the facts presented, as well as real-life applications of the text. Questions from the teacher should prompt children to understand that God is responsible for giving people their talents and abilities. Additionally, the questions should help children understand that they should be patient in times of trouble and have faith in God, like Joseph.
