Crazy Baby Shower Cake Ideas

Crazy Baby Shower Cake Ideas

Most baby showers feature predecorated grocery store-bought sheet cakes to which people add a personal message when they purchase the cake. But if you're looking for a more unusual piece, there are bakeries that can create personalized cakes that are carved and decorated to look like baby-related gear. However, these cakes can be expensive. If you want to make a crazy cake at home, which will give the baby shower quite the conversation-starter, you have several options from which to choose--and you can put it together without a ton of money or advanced pastry-chef skills.

Baby Buggy

This cake looks like a baby buggy when completed. You make it from two 9-inch round cakes. Out of one of the cakes you cut about a fourth to make a wedge. This cake is the buggy. You then cut the wedge you removed into a rounded shape to make the handle of the buggy. Cut the remaining cake into two 3.75-inch rounds using a large round cookie cutter. This creates the buggy's wheels. Once you have the cake assembled, frost it in colors to compliment the shower's theme.

Rubber Ducky

Most cakes are either flat sheet cakes or tier cakes. Even if you do not have amazing cake-decorating skills, anyone can make a three-dimensional rubber ducky cake using a cake pan. Bake the cake in a cake pan that makes a complete molded shape of a duck. Then frost it with yellow icing or cover it in yellow fondant. Color the beak orange and add black eyes to complete the duck. When completed, the duck will be sit upright and look like a real rubber ducky.

Pregnant Belly

The pregnant belly cake not only celebrates the impending arrival of the new baby, but also helps celebrate the beauty of the pregnant mother-to-be. To make the belly, use half of a large sports ball cake pan. This will make a large dome for the belly. Position two cupcakes at the top of the belly to create the allusion of cleavage. Once the cakes cool, cover them in buttercream icing and in sheets of fondant to create flesh on the cleavage, and a dress to cover the cleavage and the belly.

Wash Tub

A wash tub cake is a great way to make a larger cake to serve lots of guests. The cake is made from three cake mixes, baked into three 10-inch round cake pans. Then, you layer the cakes together to make the shape of the wash tub. Frost it with swirls of white and blue frosting to make the look of water. Then place pirouette cookies, you can find in the cookie aisle of most grocery stores, around the outside of the cake and to give the allusion of a bucket. The frosting will hold the cookies in place; however, tie a 14-inch length of ribbon around the center of the cookies to keep them more secure and add decoration to the cake. Once the cake is complete, place little rubber duckies or other small rubber bath toys on top of the cake to look like it's bath time.
