Cheap Fishing Tours In Hawaii

Looks like this lucky lady has her hands full on her fishing trip

Fishing in Hawaii is the ultimate dream for many an angler, especially those after the prized Pacific Blue Marlin. Other super-sized fish, such as the mahi mahi (Hawaiian for dorado), ahi (yellow fin tuna) and the ono (the wahoo), are plentiful in Hawaiian waters. Although Kailua-Kona on the Big Island usually gets most of press due to its annual billfish tournament, it is possible to take a fishing tour from any of the major islands. Your day in the sun doesn't have to break the bank either. Just remember not to take any bananas aboard your boat; it is considered bad luck in Hawaii.

Oahu

Kewalo Basin sits barely two miles west of the Waikiki resort area and is the launch point for many of Oahu's fishing charters. To get there just follow Ala Moana Boulevard west past Ala Moana Park. Kewalo Basin Harbor is on your right, adjacent to the park. Kewalo Basin is six miles east of the Honolulu International Airport. The closest accommodations are in Waikiki, offering hotels and condos in all price ranges.

The least expensive way to go deep sea fishing in Oahu, or on any of the major islands, is to find a charter boat company that offers shared charters. Rather than charter the entire boat, you and five others each pay a portion of the rental fee. Larger boats may hold more than six passengers, but this is the norm.

In Oahu, the Maggie Joe Sport Fishing Company, which started offering fishing and other boat tours in 1950, is such a firm. The tour offers full day and half day shared rates on all three of its boats. Bait, ice and fishing gear are all included. Passengers are asked to bring proper clothing, food and drinks. No fishing license is needed. Don't forget, no bananas. They will be confiscated.

Kauai

At present the least expensive deep sea fishing charter is aboard the 25-foot Nalani L that operates out of Kapaa on the eastern coast of Kauai. The town is just more than eight miles north of the Lihue Airport, off of Highway 56. All gear and bait is provided as well as snacks, juice, soda and water.

Freshwater fishing is also available on Kauai. The island has nine rivers and more than 165 reservoirs, all home to several species of fish including the Peacock Bass. One company offering charters is Cast and Catch Freshwater Bass Guides. There is less competition in this market so prices for shared half and full day charters tend to be a bit more expensive. Cast And Catch also operates out of Kapaa. Information on the Nalani L can be found at Activity Savers Kauai. Information on Peacock Bass fishing and Cast and Catch is available at Hawaii Fishing Adventures and Charters. Condos and mostly moderate hotels are available in Kapaa. The more deluxe properties are south of Lihue Airport along Poipu Beach or to the north in Princeville. Both locations are a 21 mile drive from Kapaa.

Maui

The one-time whaling town of Lahaina on the island's sun drenched coast is more known for whale watching cruises than fishing these days, but there are shared charter boat tours offered here as well. The 42-foot boat "Start Me Up" is one company that offers half day, three quarter day and full day charters in search of sailfish, and record setting ahi (tuna). The largest ahi caught on "Start Me Up" weighed 165 pounds.

Lahaina is less than five miles south of the Ka'anapali Beach resort area via Highway 30. Lahaina is 25 miles south west of Kahului Airport. More information on "Start Me Up" as well as other charters can be found at Hawaii Fishing Adventures and Charters. A bonus to your fishing trip during the months of November to April is the possibility of seeing humpback whales as they go about their business in the winter breeding grounds.

Hawaii, The Big Island

Kailua-Kona on the western coast of the big island of Hawaii is considered the Holy Grail of fishing grounds. A quick drop off to deep water, just under four miles from shore brings those looking for 1,000-pound plus fish in their territory very quickly. Though Kona fishing charter boats tend to rent out as private charters, there are a few that offer shared charters. One is the 38-foot "Sea Wife" which offers full and half day rates. There is also a spectator fee which comes in handy if you have a partner that wants to go along for the ride but doesn't want to fish. Unlike most fishing boats in Kona that allow a maximum of six passengers, the "Sea Wife" is certified to take 18.

The Kona harbor is roughly three miles north of Kailua-Kona town via Highway19 and Kealakehe Parkway and six miles south of the Kona International Airport via the same roadways. Accommodations, mostly moderately-priced hotels and condos, can be found in Kailua-Kona town. Those wanting more luxurious surroundings can find space at one of the mega resorts or deluxe condo complexes north of the airport along the Kona and Kohala coasts.
