Crazy Party Decorating Ideas

The right decorations will set the mood for your guests.

Whether you are known for your wild parties, or this will be your first event that's a little out there, you want your guests to enjoy the fun decorations. A winter luau, a Halloween party in March or a masquerade event all lend themselves to crazy party decorating ideas. Be creative and consider all areas of your entertaining area fair game for decorations. Does this Spark an idea?

Grand Entrances

The entrance of your home is the first impression your guests will have of your party. Too often the outside is forgotten in favor of the room you plan to use most for entertaining. Don't stick random multicolored balloons on your mailbox when you can run streamers down your door, mount clear or white lights around the doorway and handrails or stand dressed-up mannequins on your porch.

Indoor Decor

Streamer or bead curtains can be a fun way to mark the entrance to the party room. Drape colored fabrics across the ceiling or down the walls. Use centerpieces and add decorations to bookshelves and end tables, even if it's just party favors.

Tape a piece of poster board to the wall with pens nearby to be a party message board. Cover one wall in shiny wrapping paper, or place a yard stick on the wall where guests must take "mug shots" in order to enter the party.

Buy different colored light bulbs just for the party, or find some dark-colored fashion scarves to drape over your lamps. Decorate every room your guests may visit as they socialize, including your bathroom. Depending on the humor of your guests, a video camera on a tripod in the bathroom can be a fun decoration. Just be sure there are no tapes or memory cards in it.

A room often neglected at party time is the kitchen. Because you may be using the counter tops for cooking, tape decorations to your cabinet doors or the fridge, or hang streamers from the ceiling. Place fake mice and spiders throughout the kitchen, noticeable enough to make your friends question the quality of your food.

Decks and Patios

String paper lanterns overhead or use tiki torches to add light. Serve your iced drinks in a large open barrel with light-up fake ice cubes mixed in to keep the drinks easy to see throughout the night. Set up tents outside for palm reading and fortune telling to create a carnival or gypsy camp look. Place balloons on your deck with fortunes inside them. With a giant pin cushion next to the balloons, your guests will know what to do and can occasionally startle one another.
