60s Themes For A 60th Birthday Party

The 60s were a decade of breakthroughs.

Embarking on your sixtieth decade calls for a party with a 60s theme. The 1960s provide a wide range of ideas for themes: it was a breakthrough era, with the upheaval of societal norms and cultural behavior. You might choose a hippy theme, a beach theme or decide on celebtrating in the style of the Kennedys. Whatever type of theme you choose, your sixtieth birthday celebration can be fun, stimulating and memorable. Does this Spark an idea?

Psychedelic Hippy Theme

Hippy party themes can include the "Peace" sign, long hair and ethnic influences.

Flower power and long hair are just two aspects of the hippies in the 1960s. Decorate your home with colorful "Peace" signs, daisies and beaded curtains. Light some incense and wear some love beads and a Nehru jacket, bell bottoms or a peasant skirt with sandals. Display a lava lamp and play music such as the Beatles' White Album, Jimmy Hendrix and Janice Joplin. Hippies experimented with Eastern food and spirituality, so serve up some ethnic-inspired dishes, such as curries. Granola, sun chips and a vegetable tray are also good choices for snacks.

Early 60s Theme

Crank up your vintage turntable for your old LPs.

In the early part of the decade, the Kennedys reigned in Camelot, and the Beatles were still newcomers. Channel your inner Mary Tyler Moore and don a pair of clam diggers, better known now as ankle-length capris. Pair it up with a light, fitted sweater, fake pearls and ballet flats to complete the look. Decorate your home in early 60s memorabilia, such as an Audrey Hepburn photo and vintage magazines. If you have an old turntable, use it to play your vintage LPs of Frankie Avalon, the early works of The Beatles, The Temptations and Petula Clark. Food should include fondue and some form of meat encased in gelatin. Finger foods were also de rigeur: ham, pineapple and cheese on a toothpick, oysters wrapped in bacon and pigs in blankets are examples of 60s foods.

Summer Beach Theme

A beach theme party is ideal for an outdoor celebration.

Decorate your home with fake palm trees, pictures and posters of beach themes and put a tiki bar outside. You don't need a swimming pool to have a successful 60s beach theme party. A child's pool filled with water surrounded by sand can substitute for the real thing. Fill your yard with beach accessories such as surf boards and boogie boards, beach towels and tanning lotion. Music by the Beach Boys, the Drifters and the Surfaris' "Wipeout" are good examples of 60s beach music. Food choices should be tropical and fresh. Pineapples, coconut, shrimp and snack mixes are a few options. Include little paper umbrellas in your drinks for additional effect.
