Use colorful balloons to create a fun, luau theme in the backyard.
A tropical, luau-themed party is the perfect opportunity for families to work together on fun, colorful craft projects. Plan a backyard get together. Cover fold away tables with colored table cloths, hang balloons and play island music to set up a fun, festive atmosphere. Set up tables with all of the supplies necessary to create luau crafts. Kids and parents can work together to create party favors, leis, decorated straw hats and tropical drinks. Does this Spark an idea?
Lei Craft Project
Leis are traditional flower necklaces given to visitors to the Hawaiian islands and at Hawaiian luaus. For a twist on the traditional flower lei, use household materials to create a lei necklace party favor. The DLTK's website recommends using colored pieces of dry macaroni noodles, string, construction paper and pony beads to make homemade leis. Use stencils to draw flowers on brightly colored construction paper. Cut out the flowers and use a hole punch to punch holes in the middle. String a paper flower, piece of macaroni, and a pony bead on to the string. Continue to follow the flower, macaroni and pony bead pattern to finish the necklace. As an alternative to paper flowers, the Making Friends website suggests using craft foam flowers.
Tissue Paper Flowers
The Amazing Moms website suggests decorating the yard and tables with handmade tissue paper flowers. To create festive, tissue paper, luau flowers layer four to six sheets of colored tissue paper on top of one another. Fold the tissue paper squares back and forth in an accordion style. Use scissors to cut the ends of the folded tissue paper into rounded ends. Fold in half to create a fan-like shape. Fold the paper to create a loop in the bottom of the tissue paper fan. Slide a pipe cleaner into the loop and twist to secure. Use a piece of tape if necessary. Pull apart the layers of tissue paper to unfold the flower's petals.
Fruit Smoothies
Extend luau craft projects to the food, in addition to the d cor, according to the Amazing Moms website. Gather together luau-themes scrapbook stickers and clear plastic drinking cups. Give each guest the opportunity to decorate their own smoothie cup with stickers. Set up a blender, platters of fresh fruit and fruit juices. Encourage guests to make their own fruit smoothies.
Luau Wind Sock
For another fun, tropical craft project, consider making a luau-themed wind sock. For this project, purchase brightly colored craft foam, brass fasteners, foam flowers and crepe paper. Cut a large rectangle of craft foam. Roll the foam into a large cylinder shape and hold the open ends together with brass fasteners. Further secure the foam with craft glue if necessary. Glue colorful strands of crepe paper around the bottom of the foam tube to create a wind sock. Finish the tropical design by gluing foam flowers around the foam bottom of the wind sock. Also consider decorating the wind sock with tropical-themed stickers and small craft animals such as frogs, fish, parrots and dolphins.
