Hawaiian Dressup Party Ideas

Hawaiian-themed parties are a popular summer event.

Summer is a good time to think about or plan a theme-based party for persons of any age. One popular party idea is an Hawaiian-themed event. The party's budget is at the discretion of the host, and the party can be reasonably priced if there are budget constraints. Does this Spark an idea?

Footwear

Decorate rubber flip flops with plastic or silk flowers for an island look.

Any style of sandals or rubber thongs (flip flops) can be worn for a Hawaiian-themed party. Thongs can usually be found for two dollars or less during the summer months, and non-toxic craft glue can be used to attach flowers, ribbons or other small adornments to the shoes.

Leis

Leis can be made by stringing real or artificial flowers on a nylon string.

Greet guests with leis made from real, silk or plastic flowers. A large-eyed craft needle makes it easy to thread the flowers on a nylon string. Leis made using real flowers should be made the day of the party and kept refrigerated.

Hula Skirts

Use rag-style mop heads or raffia to make hula skirts. Using wide elastic or fastener tape as the waistband of a raffia skirt, place a line of non-toxic craft glue along the edge of the band and firmly apply the raffia to the glue. Allow the skirt to dry fully before trying on the skirt. Alternately, using wide elastic or fastener tape as the skirt's waistband, sew or glue mop heads to the band.

Muumuu

For older guests who may not want to wear a hula skirt, a muumuu can serve as a comfortable costume. A muumuu is a loose dress-like tunic with no waist. Simple inexpensive house coats decorated with bright flowers or other bright colorful patterns from the sleepwear section of a store would work. Wearing an A-line or baggy dress from a second-hand store is another option.

Hawaiian Shirts and Hats

Bright multi-colored or flowered shirts have a tropical look.

Bright, multicolored, flowered, short-sleeved, button-up shirts and straw hats with an unfinished edge make nice costumes for male guests. Add a pair of brown or black undecorated flip flops as the finishing touch. Straw hats are usually found in the accessories section of most stores, and Hawaiian shirts can often be found at second-hand stores and garage or yard sales.
