Traditional leis are made from fresh flowers, but you can make them at home, too.
Have a Hawaiian party with your children and let them make their own leis to add to the entertainment. Using yarn and a few simple, crafting supplies you can make leis for your party or any time you want a little bit of a tropical infusion in your day.
Flowers
All leis need flowers to make them look authentic. If you can crochet, use yarn to make your flowers, then simply add chain stitches in between them to make the body of the leis. If you want the children to make their own leis, let them pull the blossoms off the silk flowers or have them cut flower shapes out of construction paper. Make sure you punch a hole in the center of these and remove the plastic center of the silk flowers.
Spacers
Putting a little space between the flowers on the leis lets them show through and also means you need fewer flowers to make a full lei. Use large, wooden beads for your spacers if you have them. For an inexpensive option, cut up a drinking straw for each child into 1-inch sections and use these for your "beads."
Yarn
Use yarn as the necklace foundation to your leis. Cut a length of yarn that is long enough to easily go over each child's head and hang down on her chest. String the flowers and the spacers onto the yarn, then tie it on the ends with a knot.
