Card Making Invitation Ideas

Learn calligraphy for printing your own invites.

Creating your own card invitations is a special way to ask friends and family to join you for an event, such as a wedding, birthday or anniversary. Browse for card templates, which you can print out for free on assorted craft websites or create your own pattern. Add unique embellishments to your invites such as dried pressed flowers or ornaments as keepsakes.

Real Flowers

Use real flowers to decorate an invitation for a garden party, bridal or baby shower, spring birthday or anniversary. Dry the flowers if necessary, as flowers need to be free of moisture before using them in cards. Press them in heavy books and glue them to card stock you have decorated using adhesive dots, which you can purchase at most craft stores. Try cutting the top of a strip of green paper in a fringe pattern to resemble grass and add the flowers.

Beach Theme

Use seashell or beach glass ornaments as a keepsake decoration on the front of invitations for a destination wedding at the seashore. Look for vellum papers featuring ocean scenes in the scrapbooking section of craft stores to use as an overlay. Use beach colors in your invitations, such as sea green, blue and off-white. Go tropical with hot pink, orange, yellow and green colors. Look for card templates online in the shape of shells and starfish for kids' beach theme birthdays.

Sticky Notes

Purchase square phrase stickers with words that match your event, and arrange them in a grid pattern on the front of the card, as suggested by Better Homes and Gardens. Instead of placing a picture in the very middle of the card try gluing a flower (real or fake) decoration to make it more unique. For birthday invitations look for phrase stickers that say "fun," "birthday," "cake," "prizes" and "games." Use words like "love," "hearts," "forever" and "sweetheart" for a Valentine's Day party.

Animal Shapes

Use animal shapes for Halloween parties, Christmas parties, baby showers and birthday events. Print out templates and patterns or make your own, such as a black cat shape for a Halloween party or a Christmas puppy or kitten for a family holiday celebration. Baby animals, such as ducks, bunnies, kittens and chick shapes, work for baby shower invitations. Use your child's favorite animal, including cats, frogs, horses and birds, to create birthday party invitations.
