Fun Centerpiece Ideas

Tap into fun childhood memories to design a unique centerpiece.

Whimsical centerpieces can be accomplished on any budget, for any size table. Tap into your fun side and combine items that elicit a lighthearted response. Bright colors, favorite items from your childhood or a centerpiece built around one item that made you giggle are good places to start. Try to wrap your centerpiece around a party theme if you have one, or simply create a piece that can become the focal point and bring joy to party guests.

Feathered Fun

Use feathers in place of flowers for a fun centerpiece.

Design a centerpiece that uses feathers and tall willow branches or other dried items available from your local craft store. Start your centerpiece in a 1-foot-tall square or cylindrical clear glass vase. Begin by wrapping a block of floral foam in bright wrapping or tissue paper. Place the wrapped foam in the bottom of the vase. The wrapped item will be visible, so wrap it in colored paper that will enhance the design. Place tall, uniquely twisted dried twigs or reeds in the vase, securing position with the block of foam. The branches can be found in natural colors or in a wide variety of bright colors. They also can be spray painted a color of your choice. Choose the colors based on the feathers that will be used in the arrangement. The goal is to look fun, not gaudy.

Add tall feathers to the arrangement that will mimic the look of flowers. Feathers can be purchased from online vendors or from larger craft stores. Use feathers of various heights, all taller than the vase. Complete your arrangement by tying a color coordinating bow around the vase.

Childhood Remembered

Design your arrangment around a classic toy.

Design a centerpiece around a fun item from your childhood. Install a race car track on the center of your table and add cars and scenery. Place two battery-operated lanterns in the display for lighting and your design is complete.

Build a uniquely shaped centerpiece out of brightly colored interlocking blocks. Make the centerpiece as tall or wide as you'd like. Drape battery-operated clear lights around the piece to add lighting to the center or your table.

Tie a balloon arrangement to a classic toy. A paddle with attached ball, flying disk or even a small sled could be the anchor for the balloon arrangement. Simply place the item flat on the center of your table and attach the balloon bouquet.

Unique Balloon Display

Design a display using differeing shapes and sizes of colorful balloons.

Select brightly colored balloons from your local party store. Purchase classic rounds and long tubular shapes in as many sizes and colors as you'd like. Choose colors that will enhance your party theme. Allow a sports team color or a select guests' favorite colors to serve as color inspirations for your balloon choice. You'll need the round balloons to float at least 3 feet above the base, so have them blown up at the store or rent a helium machine to blow them up just prior to the party.

Start your centerpiece with a plastic or metal party bucket typically used to store ice and beverages. Choose a container with sides at least 18 inches tall. Fill the bin by attaching the floating round balloons to colorful curling ribbon and a weight. Place the weight in the center of the container and fill the remaining open space with the vertical narrow balloons. Finish the design by tying a wired ribbon bow around the exterior of the container.

Sweets

Use seasonal or everyday wrapped candy for a sweet centerpiece.

Gather three tall clear glass vases and fill them each with colorfully wrapped candies. Fill each vase to a different level. Place the vases next to each other for a quick and inexpensive, fun centerpiece.
