Bulletin Board Ideas For September

September marks the beginning of fall with changing leaves and cool breezes.

The 10th month of the year signals the winding down of summer and the welcome cool breezes of fall. People come back into town for school and work from their vacations in the woods or at the beach. Welcome back the people in your organization or office with an informative and interesting bulletin board display. Does this Spark an idea?

Apple Month

Celebrate the fall harvest with the kickoff of National Apple Month in September. This bulletin board idea for September offers a number of colorful and festive options: Post addresses and schedules of local apple orchards that offer pick-your-own fruit. Place the nutritional information for apples on the board. Recipes for award-winning pies, apple cakes, cobbler and applesauce would work well to round off this snappy display.

Self Improvement

September is National Self-Improvement Month. Decorate your bulletin board with practical suggestions and pertinent information to help the people in your organization or workplace improve themselves. Focusing on improving people's health is a good option. Post information about local gyms, any specials they're running and the benefits of cardiovascular and weight-bearing exercise.

You could also encourage people to expand their horizons in a continuing education class. Attach course catalogs and class descriptions from adult education classes or learning annex courses in your area to the bulletin board. Finally, add a section on books and the benefits of reading. Offer the hours and contact information of locally owned used and new bookstores in your community.

Preparedness

September also is National Preparedness Month. Unfortunately, every community could be susceptible to a natural disaster or something worse. Tornadoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, flooding, chemical spills and industrial accidents can leave residents without power, water, gas and telephone. Provide information on the calamities most likely to happen in your area and official evacuation routes in the building and in town.

Advise people of the information available on the Ready America website (Ready.gov) and post the recommended three-day survival supply list. Remind folks to change the batteries in their flashlights and prepare an emergency kit for the car. Whether you live in the country or the city, it is possible to be stuck in your car overnight due to weather conditions. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) suggests, "This kit should contain food, water, first aid supplies, flares, jumper cables and seasonal supplies."
