Barbie Cake Projects

Barbie cakes can be used for princess parties.

Just about every little girl owns a Barbie and accessories. When hosting a Barbie- or princess-themed party, a Barbie cake will be needed to match. The type of cake you select should be based on your cake decorating skill level and the amount of time you have to give for the project. Does this Spark an idea?

3D Doll Cakes

3D doll cakes have become very popular. These cakes consist of a standing Barbie pressed into a bowl- or dome-shaped cake so it looks like the skirt of a dress. These cakes require a little more time and skill because of the carving and sculpting involved. 3D doll cakes can be used to create dresses for Barbie, princesses from Disney movies, other dolls or even a figure that looks like the birthday girl. The skirt portion of the Barbie cake can be covered with buttercream frosting or made even more detailed by covering it with fondant.

Photo Cakes

Photo cakes are relatively simple to make, but they can be purchased at your local bakery if you are in a hurry. Photo cakes consist of an edible piece of rice paper put through a special printer with edible ink. Just about any Barbie image can be printed, but some local bakeries require you choose from their album selection. If you want a more customized Barbie photo, you can visit an online cake decorating store, upload a photograph, and receive the print in the mail. The only thing you have to do, then, is place the printed rice paper on a sheet cake when it arrives.

Sheet Cakes and Rounds

Another way to use a Barbie in a cake decoration is to use the doll as the decoration itself. Decorate a scene on top of a round or sheet cake and place the Barbie sitting, laying or standing on top of the cake. For example, a beach-themed Barbie party can have a sheet cake covered in edible sand, a Barbie in beach clothes sitting on that beach, and a few accessories like umbrellas, towels and a sand pail. If you are not skilled at baking, order a plain sheet cake or round from the bakery and add the non-edible decorations yourself at home.

Cupcakes

A Barbie cake does not always have to be a large cake. Cupcakes can be used in place of a large cake for easier serving, especially at a kid's birthday party. Purchase premade cupcake toppers in the shape of tiaras, the Barbie logo or even mini Barbie dolls. Frost cupcakes with bright pink, white, purple or green frosting complementing the Barbie theme you are using. Purchase edible luster dust or glitter to sprinkle on top of cupcakes to make them glow and shimmer.
