Creature Capture Games

Capturing creature games come in various forms.

Capturing different creatures, imaginary or real, is a popular theme in games. Rather than hunting or killing the creatures, creature capture games emphasize the welfare of the animal and focus on conservation. Games in which you capture creatures are available as console games, board games, card games and flash games.

Console Games

"Gotta catch them all!" reads the tag line of the popular franchise Pokemon. As a Pokemon trainer, you travel the world and subdue different Pokemon by battling them with your own Pokemon. These creatures can then be captured and trained as your own. Rather than allowing you to physically capture Pokemon, the game "Pokemon Snap" on Nintendo 64 requires the player to capture Pokemon on camera. Pokemon games are available only for Nintendo.

Flash Games

There several free games available online in which you have to capture different animals. In the turn-based game "Animal Capture," you're given the choice to capture either a penguin or a duck by placing obstacles around it. Different strategies are required, as each animal reacts differently to your actions. "Catch the Chicks" requires you to poke the loose chickens back into their coop within the allocated time. Each round becomes more difficult as the number of chickens increases. Both games are linked in the Resources section.

Board Games

"Wild Pursuit" requires you to capture and tag wild animals from around the world so that scientists can study them and protect their natural habitat. But first you need the right equipment to track and capture them before your opponents do. The game is designed for two to six players, ages 12 and up. "Fox and Geese" is an old strategy game for two players in which the fox's aim is to capture all nine geese by jumping over them, which removes them from the board, while they attempt to corner him so that he cannot move.

Card Games

"The Spiderwick Chronicles Creature Capture Card Game" is ideal for young fans of the book or film. Players have to try and capture five creatures using a mix of unique power cards. Each creature is worth different points which are totaled after the first player has caught five creatures to determine the winner. "The Spiderwick Chronicles Creature Capture Card Game" is designed for two to four players.
