Graduation Party Ideas & Menus

An impressive graduation party is usually the result of good graduation party ideas and menus that reflect the personality of the graduate. Do you want to play beach volleyball at your graduation? Just want to kick back and hang out, then a causal affair is best suited for you. Maybe you want a more elegant celebration, there ideas for all of these graduation party types, you just have to know where to find them.

The Causal Affair

Your back yard is ideal for this graduation. This is a laid back affair, one to enjoy your guest, simple food and celebrate your accomplishment. Possible themes include the sports, Spanish club or chess club.

Decorations range from simple graduation year banners to school colors.

Use trophies as weights for balloons.

Use black and white checked table clothes and set chess pieces (found in second hand or dollar stores).

"Did you know?" place mats with facts about the graduate on them.

Food should be casual but not boring:

Do wraps instead of the ham sandwiches

Chicken wings make a nice alternative to sandwiches

Cheese and marinara fondue

Deserts:

A brownie bar

Chocolate fountain

Cheese cake squares with fresh fruit on the side

Formal

Usually held in a restaurant or hall featuring finger foods, shrimp cocktail and background music. Pick a location that will provide the type of atmosphere you want to have. This can be done with decorations, sound systems and food.

Decorations should be kept to a minimum and enhance your theme. For example, if you are celebrating your completion of a bachelor's of structural engineering have models of your favorite architecture displayed.

Background music can really set the mood for your formal party but don't be afraid to be creative here. If you headed off to college to study theater, have movie musical soundtracks playing.

The expectation of food choices will be different than a causal event. A pasta bar is an ideal fit. It is inexpensive but can offer an impressive selection of pasta dishes and sides.

Super Casual Party!

Here the focus is fun. Games, take-out food and music are critical to the super casual party celebration.

Decorations are replaced with games. The types of games you select will determine the overall theme and feel of your graduation. Are you going to have drop in games such as volleyball or yard bowling? Do you want structured board games? Or are you going to hook up the Wii?

Once you have determined the feel of your games, select food that will compliment them. Outdoor games such as horse shoes or soccer work with sub sandwiches. Board games make it easy to serve chili or spaghetti. Have an intermission to your Wii play and offer a pizza bar.
