Cake Decorations For Kids

Cake Decorations for Kids

A cake is one of the core features of a child's birthday party. Therefore, deciding decorate the cake should not be taken lightly. Factors such as the child's age, his interests, the size of the party and your budget should all be taken into account. Once you have some ideas, finding the perfect cake decorations will be easy and even fun.

Types

There are about as many types of cake decorating ideas as there are types of kids. You can choose from a sheet cake, a shaped cake, an ice cream cake, a layer cake, a tiered cake, cupcakes or even a cheesecake. The decorations can be based on sports, characters, critters, machines, dolls, fairy tales, monsters, movies or just about anything else your child can dream up.

Features

Once you have chosen the flavor, type and style of cake you want, you can start deciding on features. Decorating a cake for kids allows you to be very imaginative. One popular feature for a child's cake is candy. For instance, if you are making a cake for a pirate theme party, you could shape it like a treasure chest. Fill it with candy wrapped in gold foil or jewel tones. When decorating a character cake, use jellybeans for eyes, licorice for mouths, fruit rolls for clothing and Pixy Stix powder to add sparkle and color.

Effects

Small toys are a creative way to dress up a child's cake. You can set up a miniature train track on a sheet cake. Line up train cars, "plant" small trees and station the train master at his post. Miniature action figures are another good choice, because you can place them in battle stance atop the cake and give the dolls to the celebrant as a bonus gift. You can also stand a 12-inch doll inside a bundt cake. Frost the bundt cake and the doll's torso to give the appearance of a ball gown.

Considerations

Cake pans are available in a number of themed shapes. All you need to do is whip up the batter, pour it in the shaped pan and bake it. However, you can decorate a cake in the shape you desire, even if you do not have a special pan. Starting with a sheet cake and a serrated knife, slice out a dragon, teddy bear, robot or other shapes. You can also combine round and rectangular cakes to make the desired size and shape.

Benefits

Homemade cakes show care and creativity but make it easier on yourself. Using cake mix in your child's favorite flavor and tubs of frosting will greatly help you. Fondant, a dough-like frosting you can roll out and drape on a cake, is a quick way to give your child's cake a professional appearance. Cookie cutters are useful as well. Frost the cake with the main color, and then press the cookie cutter into the frosting. Use tubes of icing to line and color the shapes on the cake.
