Florida building codes are divided into residential and non-residential categories.
Building codes for Citrus County, Florida, are based on the current Florida Building Code, as defined by the Florida Department of Community Affairs. This code defines ordinances and laws that govern the process for building permits, inspections, construction standards, contractor licensing and ongoing compliance. The Citrus County Board of Commissioners has also enacted additional ordinances to address issues specific to Citrus County.
Administration and Compliance
Building codes and regulations for Citrus County, Florida, are administered by the Board of County Commissioners' Department of Development Services. This department, which includes the divisions of Building, Code Compliance, Land Development and Planning, is responsible for building plan review, permits, inspections, code enforcement, land use, environmental sciences and historic preservation. The Department of Development Services uses the current Florida Building Code to help establish statutes, codes, programs and ordinances for Citrus County.

Citrus County has established a website to provide information on permit applications, inspections, reviews and contractor listings. This site also provides online contractor training for topics relating to applying for a permit, scheduling inspections online and checking inspection and review status. Contractors must set up an online account before accessing any of these services.
Version
As dictated by the State of Florida, Citrus County currently utilizes Florida Building Code 2007, as well as any revisions. This code is divided into eight sections: building, residential, existing building, plumbing, fuel gas, mechanical, test protocols and energy. While statewide addendum's and supplements to the existing code are common, major version changes are far less frequent. Each Florida county can also submit addendums, applicable to building code administration within their county.
Division of Building
In addition to administering the Florida Building code, the Division of Building is also responsible for addressing issues specific to Citrus County. These issues include hurricane mitigation retrofit rules, sheathing information, inspection process for re-roofing inspections and online document submission
