Elderly people can keep active with several activity options.
While life may slow down a bit as you get older, you can still be active and enjoy keeping busy. You may prefer getting a little fresh air with a long hike while other seniors may prefer a more relaxing activity such as a crossword puzzle or reading a book in order to keep the mind healthy. In any case, several other free options are available to keep you healthy and active in your latter years. Does this Spark an idea?
Walking
Take a relaxing hike with the family.
A hike is a nice relaxing way to take in some fresh air while getting exercise. Try walking around the local high school track or hiking down that new trail in the park. This is a great way to leisurely take in the sites while exercising the body. Bring a friend or two and start a walking club. Once a week you and your friends can walk down to the local bistro, grab a bagel and catch up with each other. Walking is a fun and relaxing way to stimulate the mind while keeping the body healthy. Bring a camera and take scenic photos that you can make into a scrapbook later.
Dance Classes
Take that dance class you never thought you'd take.
If you always thought about learning the Rhumba or dancing the waltz, then try a dance class. Several classes are offered free or discounted for local senior citizens. The best thing about a dance class is that it doesn't have to be a couple's thing either. Take that jazz or tap class you've talked about taking since you were a child or revisit those ballet steps you haven't done since you were a young girl. There is no pressure because each class is catered to an individual's skill level. Make it extra fun by bringing a friend with you to salsa the night away.
Book Clubs
Reading stimulates the mind.
For seniors that have limited mobility, this is a wonderful option because it allows you to get together with other book lovers to read and talk about the latest books or classics. To start a book club, have a set list of titles suggested by you and your friends. Meet once or twice a week to discuss chapters. Consider reading those classics you loved as a child. Turn this into more of a social event with food and drinks. To take this idea a step further, consider doing a fun movie night by watching the cinematic version of that classic novel.
Volunteer
If you want to give back to the community you have lived in for years, consider volunteering. It's fun, free and great for seniors with limited mobility. Assisted-living facilities offer Bingo nights and arts and crafts classes, among others. Volunteer to help set up the Bingo cards or to call out the numbers. If there is a particular craft you are good at, consider volunteering to teach that craft to others. Volunteering is a great way to stay busy.
